spot he had chosen. No doubt some people were more important than others and the most important
ones camped near the Elders.
The Aborigines 'decorated' their bodies with personal decorations that included pipe-clay and
other e symbols that conveyed messages designs or patterns on their arms, legs and upper body -
particularly at ceremonial times. The patters were not random. In other words they were symbols that
conveyed messages e.g., they represented the totems of individuals or denoted information about the
tribe itself. The Aborigines often used the fat of animals to cover their bodies to protect them from
insects such as mosquitoes. Some of the early Europeans considered that this practice 'gave them a
most unpleasant odour'. No doubt it did, but it also provided effective protection against insect stings.
