No Olympics were held for over a thousand years, until the year 1896. The games were revived by a French nobleman named Pierre Frédy, Baron de Coubertin. The first contemporary Olympic Games took place with great glamour in Athens, in the Panathenaic Stadium. During the first games, only 13 countries participated but now that number has gone up to over two hundred. Athletes from all over the world take part and their achievements are watched from both near and far by hundreds of millions of spectators.
