Mabbe made the translation at the age of twenty-six while a student at the University of
Oxford. He used the edition from 1502 of the tragicomedia with all 21 acts, as well as the Italian
translation published in 1506 by Ordóñez. In this 1987 edition, the letter "El autor a un su

Severin writes that "Mabbe's Jacobean style appears somewhat overwrought by
comparison to the austerity of the original model, and is in fact quite a bit longer because of
Mabbe's tendency to overexplain and to find synonymous words with which to amplify the text"
(Severin p XV). The Jacobean style of literature are the works written during the reign of King
