Laeva meeskond pakkus talle sööki, kuid Bombard keeldus ja otsustas jätkata. Bombard jõudis Barbadosele 23. detsembril 1952, pärast 4400 km pikkust merereisi. Ta oli kaotanud 25 kg oma kehakaalust ja viibis lühiajaliselt haiglas. Bombard suri Prantsusmaa lõunaosas Touloni linnas 2005. aastal 80 aastasena. Mitmed maailmarändurid on tahtnud sooritada samasugust reisi nagu Bombard, kuid ükski inimene ei ole suutnud seda läbida. The obituaries called him "the father of American cryptography." They were wrong, but they demonstrated the deep impression that Yardley's writing had made on the American consciousness. With all its faults and falsehoods, his book had captured the imagination of the public and inspired untold numbers of amateurs to become interested in cryptology. To the extent that the impact of their fresh ideas enriched American cryptology, the credit must go to him.
