On January 1, 1901 Australian colonies
federated to become the Commonwealth of Australia. At 1.00pm the first Governor General of Australia
read the Proclamation of the Act to form the Commonwealth of Australia from a Pavilion. Then at
Centennial Park, Sydney. Australia had declared independence from the federation of UK colonies.
As neither Sydney nor Melbourne was acceptable new capital, a new city Canberra was built for that.
Today Australia has a global, nondiscriminatory policy and is home to people from more than 200
countries.

The Commonwealth of Australia is a constitutional monarchy and has a parliamentary system of
government. Queen Elizabeth II is the Queen of Australia, a role that is distinct from her position
as monarch of the other Commonwealth Realms. The Queen is nominally represented by the
GovernorGeneral at Federal level and by the Governors at State level
