Harlem renaissance the third period when black literature, poetry, drama started to flurish
in the Harlem region in NY. Basically black modernist writing.
The fourth from the harlem renaissance to the civil rights in the 60' and black arts. This is the
time when blackness was celebrated. There was no shame on negritude.
The fifth period from the 60's til the present.
Toni Morrison deals with several of these periods but the most important are the 2nd and the
3rd.

It's about the Dead family. The protagonist is Macon Dead, a milk man, He goes on a journey
to find out where he really comes from, his roots. It's a bildungsroman. We see his spiritual
