George Orwell
AUTHOR
George Orwell was the pen name of the English author, Eric Arthur Blair. He was
born on June 25 in 1903 in Motihari, Bengal, in the then British colony of India, where
his father, Richard, worked for the Opium Department of the Civil Service. His
mother, Ida, brought him to England at the age of one. Orwell was educated in
England at Eton College. After service with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma from
1922 to 1928, he returned to Europe to become a writer. He lived in Paris for the next
two years, and then came to England as a school-teacher. He lived for several years
in poverty
