Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria

At the same time the car sped to the Governor's residence to get medical help. Unfortunately, Sofie was dead before they arrived and the Archduke died a few minutes later. The Austria-Hungary government saw the assassination as a direct attack on the country. They believed that the Serbians had helped the Bosnian terrorists in the attack. They made harsh demands on the Serbians which the Serbians rejected. At the same time, Russia began to mobilize their army to help protect Serbia. When Serbia rejected the demands, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. A few days later, Germany declared war on Russia to help its ally Austria-Hungary. Then France began to mobilize to help its ally Russia, and Germany followed by declaring war on France. World War I had begun.

Each country tried to prove their dominance and power. Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand: In June 1914, a Serbian nationalist assassinated him and his wife while they were in Sarajevo, Bosnia which was part of Austria-Hungary. This was in protest to Austria-Hungary having control of this region. Serbia wanted to take over Bosnia and Herzegovina. This assassination led to Austria- Hungary declaring war on Serbia. When Russia began to mobilize due to its alliance with Serbia, Germany declared war on Russia. Thus began the expansion of the war to include all those involved in the mutual defense alliances. "Splendid isolation" Splendid Isolation was the foreign policy pursued by Britain during the late 19th century. The term was actually coined by a Canadian M.P. to praise Britain's lack of involvement in European affairs. It basically means that Great Britain was isolated from the rest of Europe:

Strategies of creating a dominant party – the case of UR

2007: 124). For example during the 2007 Duma elections campaign, United Russia openly demonstrated its loyalty to president Putin by manifesting ,,Vote for Putin's plan!", while its position on major policy issues remained questionable (Gel'man 2008: 921). In this light, United Russia can definitely be seen as a leader-oriented, de-ideologized catch-all party. Secondly, it is also important for a dominant party to mobilize key socio-economic groups. On one hand, dominant party needs to focus on groups that will make fewer demands than others or that will give a maximum political payoff for minimum effort. However, in order to claim to represent the interests of the whole nation, the party must cover wide range of political spectrum and therefore recruit supporters from all parts of society (Arian and Barnes 1974: 598). A perfect example of United Russia's strive to reach all segments of society is the

being done by the figurative nature of the underlying similes, and so their figurative interpretations need explaining in turn. Indeed, our original two main questions arise for figurative similes: What is it for such sentences to have figurative meanings, and how are those meanings conveyed to hearers? Fogelin (1988) exploits the notion of a salient feature of a thing.7 (Those are the features that jump out at you, or loom large for you.) In that way he is able to mobilize a nonsymmetrical similarity relation (p. 78): "A is similar to B if and only if A has a sufficient number of B's salient features." A may share a sufficient number of B's salient features without B's sharing a sufficient number of A's salient features, since the particular features of B that A shares need not be salient in A. For example, a chipmunk is very like a rat, except for being cute or perceived as such by humans; it has most of the rat's salient

W e often act as if all questions have a right or wrong answer, all statements are either true or false, people are either good or bad, normal or abnormal. Either a thing is real or it isn't. Either you are with me or against me. Sometimes these categories are useful, but they can also be limiting and may not adequately represent reality. Polarization is a powerful force in politics and rhetoric, allowing leaders and propagandists to mobilize anger and passion by artificially dividing the world into " u s " and "them" categories, a simplification of the world that makes it easier to deal with, but ignores many intermediate or alternative points of view. However, polarity is a real phenomenon in human relationships and an important engine of conflict in storytelling. Characters in relationships strongly tend to become polarized as part of their process of growing and learning through conflict
