A group of soldiers led by Major George Johnston arrested
him. He was held prisoner until he agreed to leave Australia, however soon after Johnston set sail, he
decided to return.
In 1797 Merino sheep were brought to Australia, booming the number of sheep quickly. There
was a huge demand for their wool and by 1850 there were 13 million sheep in New South Wales. By
then, half of the wool woven in Britain came from Australia/Tasmania.
In 1798 George Bass and Matther Flinders proved Van Diemen's land was seperate from the
mainland. The first settlers arriving in Van Diemen's land arrived in 1803. There was a whaling industry
in the Bass Strait in the 19th century. Shipbuilding also grew up in Hobard in the mid19th century. In
1825 Tasmania was seperated from Australia for administrative purposes and transportation ended in
1853. Soon tin was discovered and a new industry grew. The population of Tasmania grew fast. The
