Poiss leidis kuni 16aastaseks saamiseni, et ta on pagan. Siis müüsid Iiri maradöörid ta orjaks ning orjapõlves sai ta lähedaseks Jumalaga. Pärast kuut aastat orjamist Maewyn põgenes ning läks Gauli kloostrisse. Ta veetis seal kaksteist aastat oma elust. Sel ajal ta mõistis, et tema missioon on paganate ümberpööramine kristlasteks.
