The Gifts of Imperfection: Embrace Who You Are
We try our hardest to fit in: to
do what we think we should do. We work hard at our job, because society expects us to; we don’t
spend that much time having fun, because we think people would judge us as frivolous.
But what’s the result of all this? We end up leading anxious and unhappy lives.
No one can define what’s meaningful for us. Culture doesn’t get to dictate if it’s working outside the
home, raising children, lawyering, teaching, or painting. Like our gifts and talents, meaning is
unique to each one of us. Throughout human history, we’ve relied on laughter, song, and dance to
express ourselves, to communicate our stories and emotions, to celebrate and mourn, and to nurture
community. While most people would tell you that a life without laughter, music, and dance would
be unbearable, it’s easy to take these experiences for granted.
