But they knew that they could never
live as husband and wife. Their parents wanted them to marry someone else and
decided to separate them. The lovers escaped to the woods and lived in the
mountain forests. When the longer nights and story days reminded them of
winter, Quiss-an-Kweedass wanted to revisit his home, and to make the journey
alone. He promised to return on the fourth day.
5 E Her parents were glad to have their lost child, and Quiss-an-KJweedass was
happy to have his wide. Although she was at home and kindly welcomed, she
was worried about her two sons and wished to return for them. She explained
that the bear had made up a song for her, and if Quiss-an-Kweedass went to the
tree and sang it, the bear chief would give him whatever he wished. After learning
the song, Quiss-an-Kweedass went to the tree and began to sing. As soon as the
bear heard the song, he came down, thinking that Kind-a-wuss had returned.
