Khedivial government. Eventually, a revolt broke out in Sudan, which culminated in the fall
of Khartoum and the death of the British governor General Gordon. The Egyptian and British
forces withdrew from Sudan.
*General Gordon and Khartoum 1885 was a British army officer and administrator. He is
remembered for his campaigns in China and northern Africa. The khedive asked for Gordon
to succeed Baker as governor of the region. After a short stay in Cairo, Gordon proceeded to
Khartoum
