Riigis toimusid peale iseseisvumist iga 5 aasta tagant valimised. 1994. aastal toimus sõjaväeline riigipööre, mille tulemusena kõrvaldati president Dawda Jawara erakonna liikmed ja mitmed teised valitsuse liikmed poliitikast. Uueks riigipeaks sai AFPRC (Relvastatud Jõudude Ajutine Juhtiv Nõukogu) esimees Leitnant Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh. AFPRC avaldas üleminekuplaani, muutumaks tagasi demokraatlikuks valitsuseks. 2001 aasta lõpul sai Gambia presidendil ametiaeg täis ning järgmised valimised võitnud president Yahya Jammeh andis 21. detsembril 2001 uue ametivande.
