How has the nature of fame changed?

Is there anything different in the way they are or how they became famous? It’s no surprise that the way celebrities present themselves has changed immeasurably since the Golden Age of Hollywood. Back in the day, celebrities were presented as incomparably glamorous, flawless beings, closer to gods than humans. Fame was controlled not by the famous and certainly not by the audience, but by the owners of the media. The lives of the rich and the famous used to be mysterious and even inexplicable. It was so foreign and artificial a construct that we thought that fame made you special. The rise of reality TV, however, was a major step in the changing nature of celebrity. “Normal people” became stars overnight. The dominance of smartphones and social media has meant that the public records everything: nervous breakdowns, breakups and displays of erratic behavior, and popular celebrities seem to have become beloved for being like us – or at least more photogenic versions of us

It pleased you; it was a privilege and agreement, and under seal and oath, and you granted me the title of viceroy and admiral and governor general of all. And you fixed the boundary. a hundred leagues beyond the Azores and the Cape Verde Islands, by a line passing from pole to pole, and you gave me wide power over this and over all that I might further discover. The document states this very fully. The other most important matter, which calls aloud for redress. remains inexplicable to this moment. Seven years I was at your royal court, where all to whom this undertaking was mentioned, unanimously declared it to be a delusion. Now all, down to the very tailors, seek permission to make discoveries. It can be believed that they go forth to plunder, and it is granted to them to do so, so that they greatly prejudice my honor and do very great damage to the enterprise. It is well to give to God that which is His due and to Caesar that which belongs to him

"objective correlative"; in other words, a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events which shall be the formula of that particular emotion; such that when the external facts, which must terminate in sensory experience, are given, the emotion is immediately evoked. An objective correlative is a literary term referring to a symbolic article used to provide explicit(sõnaselge), rather than implicit(kaudne, varjatud), access to such traditionally inexplicable concepts as emotion or colour. The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock. Described as a "drama of literary anguish," it presents a stream of consciousness in the form of a dramatic monologue, and marked the beginning of Eliot's career as an influential poet. With its weariness, regret, embarrassment, longing, emasculation, sexual frustration, sense of decay, and awareness of mortality, Prufrock has become one of the most recognized voices in modern literature.

town-crier spoke my lines. Nor do not saw the air too much with your hand, thus, but use all gently; for in the very torrent, tempest, and, as I may say, the whirlwind of passion, you must acquire and beget a temperance that may give it smoothness. O, it offends me to the soul to hear a robustious periwig-pated fellow tear a passion to tatters, to very rags, to split the ears of the groundlings, who for the most part are capable of nothing but inexplicable dumbshows and noise: I would have such a fellow whipped for o'erdoing Termagant; it out-herods Herod: pray you, avoid it. First Player I warrant your honour. HAMLET Be not too tame neither, but let your own discretion be your tutor: suit the action to the word, the word to the action; with this special o'erstep not the modesty of nature: for any thing so overdone is from the purpose of playing, whose end, both at the first and now, was and is, to hold, as 'twere, the

He took a swift peek, and then wrote it down. I would have written it while he looked, but his clear, elegant script intimidated me. I didn't want to spoil the page with my clumsy scrawl. We were finished before anyone else was close. I could see Mike and his partner comparing two slides again and again, and another group had their book open under the table. Which left me with nothing to do but try to not look at him... unsuccessfully. I glanced up, and he was staring at me, that same inexplicable look of frustration in his eyes. Suddenly I identified that subtle difference in his face. "Did you get contacts?" I blurted out unthinkingly. He seemed puzzled by my unexpected question. "No." "Oh," I mumbled. "I thought there was something different about your eyes." He shrugged, and looked away. In fact, I was sure there was something different. I vividly remembered the flat black color of his eyes the

spotless limo tinted windows. I was flushed and my gray eyes were overly bright. I'd seen that look on my face before-in the bathroom mirror just before I went to bed with a man. It was my I'm-ready-to-fuck look and it had absolutely no business being on my face now. Christ. Get a grip. Five minutes with Mr. Dark and Dangerous, and I was filled with an edgy, restless energy. I could still feel the pull of him, the inexplicable urge to go back inside where he was. I could make the argument that I hadn't finished what I'd come to the Crossfire to do, but I knew I'd kick myself for it later. How many times was I going to make an ass of myself in one day? "Enough," I scolded myself under my breath. "Moving on." Horns blared as one cab darted in front of another with only inches to spare and then slammed on the brakes as daring pedestrians stepped into the intersection seconds before the light changed.

Even if we discount uncon- troversially "dead" metaphor, few human utterances are entirely free of Metaphor 179 metaphorical elements. If metaphorical utterances are rarely true, then utter- ances are rarely true. Finally, Moran (1997: 263) notes that, when a metaphor dies, the relevant expression acquires a new literal meaning and accordingly gets an additional dictionary entry. This would be inexplicable, or at least arbitrary and odd, if the metaphor had previously had no sort of meaning at all. And there are contemporary views that reject metaphorical sentence mean- ing but give more plausible accounts of metaphorical communication. Given the availability of such accounts, there is no reason to accept Davidson's purely causal theory. The Naive Simile Theory Philosophers beginning with Aristotle have noticed a striking similarity

rich as a result of luck or some remarkable external circumstance. ■ YOU CREATE YOUR OWN LUCK Often people ask me about the role of luck in success. They are con- vinced that luck is a critical factor in achieving anything worth- while. They feel that some people are just lucky and some are not. They talk about luck as if it were a matter of fate or destiny, largely inexplicable.
