Although RARs can activate gene expression through binding to thyroid hormone
response elements, a much more specific and potent RA response element (RARE) has
been identified recently within the promoter of the RAR-beta gene. This RARE is
essential for RA induction of the RAR-beta gene and, when linked to heterologous
promoters, can confer transcriptional activation via all three RARs.

Some of these genes are the homeotic genes that specify the position of the cell along the
anterior-posterior axis and therefore will cause the cell to display different characteristics.
(2) They repress the activity of the AP-1 transcription factor. This transcription factor is
important in activating those genes responsible for cell division and for the production of
metalloproteinases that often permit cell migration.
