1.3 Purse ja maavärinad Aastal 1980 20-ndal märtsil toimus St Helensi vulkaani juures 4.2 magnituudiline maavärin ning 27-ndal märtsil hakkas kraatris kerkima suitsu.18-ndal mail toimus teine, 5.1 magnituudiline maavärin, mille tagajärjel tekkis vulkaani põhjaosas suur varisemine.Vulkaani sees olev magma purskas välja, tekitades tohutu tuha pilve.Aastatel 1980-1986 jätkus selline tegevus ja mitmeid kordi lendas vulkaanist välja suuri tuhapilvi. joonis 3. Vulkaan on 2,550 meetri kõrgune 1,404 meetri laiune.Vulkaan on akttivne ja umbes 40000 aasta vanune.Esimene inimene sellel vulkaanil oli 1853 aastal Thomas J.
