Pamuki kaitseks ja kohtuprotsessi aluseks olnud seadusesätte vastu astus välja Amnesty International. Kaheksa maailmakuulsat kolleegi kirjanduse alal, José Saramago, Gabriel García Márquez, Günter Grass, Umberto Eco, Carlos Fuentes, Juan Goytisolo, John Updike ja Mario Vargas Llosa koostasid mehe toetuseks ühise pöördumise.
