Celtic Mythology / Keldi Mütoloogia

Celtic Mythology Celtic mythology is the mythology of Celtic polytheism, apparently the religion of the Iron Age Celts. Like other Iron Age Europeans, the early Celts maintained a polytheistic mythology and religious structure. Among Celts in close contact with Ancient Rome, such as the Gauls and Celtiberians, their mythology did not survive the Roman empire, their subsequent conversion to Christianity, and the loss of their Celtic languages. It is mostly through contemporary Roman and Christian sources that their mythology has been preserved. The Celts peoples who maintained either their political or linguistic identities (such as the Gaels and Brythonic tribes of Great Britain and Ireland) left vestigial remnants of their

and valleys of Wales. The battle for Yorkshire and the remainder of northern England was still underway in AD 70 The first Roman city was Camulodunum also called Colonia Vitricencis. It was the seat of Roman power and governance of Brittania until sacked during the Boudiccan revolt. Why the Romans came to Britain is not quite certain. Two reasons have been suggested: 1) The Romans were cross with Britain for helping the Gauls (now called the French) fight against the Roman general Julius Caesar. 2) They came to Britain looking for riches - land, slaves, and most of all, iron, lead, zinc, copper, silver and gold. How long did the Romans stay in Britain? The Romans remained in Britain from 43 AD to 410 AD. That is almost four hundred years (four centuries). Why did the Romans leave Britain? Their homes in Italy were being attacked by fierce tribes and every soldier was needed.

During the Bronze Age, they mined tin, gold and copper and made bronze tools. They also probably built the spectacular prehistoric megaliths, such as Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. The Celts invaded the British Isles in the 5th century BC in two waves. The Britons grew wheat and corn, caught fish, and tamed and bred animals. They made coarse cloth for their clothes, learned the art of pottery, made things of wool, metal and copper, and were good warriors. They traded with the Gauls and built many temples and altars. The Celts brought with them a knowledge of smelting iron, which produced stronger weapons than the bronze ones. They had a strange and cruel religion, sometimes human beings were sacrificed. In 43 AD the Roman Invasion in Britain started. The millions of people who lived under the Romans, were bound together under a common system of law and government. Ancient Rome had an enormous influence on the development of Western civilization. Julius Caesar reached

ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

In 58–51 BC, the Roman general and political leader Gaius Julius Caesar 1 completed his conquest of Gaul. But Gallic resistance was hard to break and was strengthened by help from Britain. Caesar led two military expeditions to Britain in 55 and 54 BC. So the Romans became directly acquainted with Britain. In 54 BC Caesar advanced deep inland. His chief aim in invading Britain was to destroy the druids – influential Celtic priests who were the main organizers of help for the Gauls. He also knew that further conquests would boost his popularity in Rome. But a rebellion in Gaul forced him to withdraw from Britain. And the Civil War in Rome forced him to put off the idea indefinitely. The Conquest The Romans did not invade Britain again until nearly 100 years after Caesar’s two expeditions. A large Roman army landed there in 43 AD. The tribes of south- eastern Britain were defeated
