GCC version 1.0 released by Free Software Foundation founder Richard Stallman.
GCC once stood for GNU C Compiler, since it was used to compile programs written in the
C programming language for Stallman's "GNU's Not Unix" (GNU) effort to create a clone of
Unix. Now, though, because GCC accepts programs written in many other languages as well,
GCC stands for GNU Compiler Collection.
GCC is the main compiler used on all kinds of UNIX-es, and several ports of GCC (cygwin,
djgpp) are highly popular on MS Windows as well
