THE CAPITALIST NIGER

In fact, this stupidity is still being taught in African schools even as of this writing, as if Africa did not exist before the Caucasian ventured into the continent. I knew about Cecil Rhodes and Mungo Park and all the other so-called “founding explorers” of Africa. Nobody taught me the great warriors of Ohafia and Abam in Igboland; nobody taught me about the great Pyramids of Egypt; nobody explained the great fight that the Ashantis put up against the British. Rather I was taught how to demean the accomplishments of these great people; nobody taught me the great Kingdoms of the Zimbabwe. I was taught about the Kings and Queens of England and Scotland; the Kings of France; the culture and history of the English and other Europeans. By the Third Grade, I could recite all the capitals of the European world, their types of government and their great men. But I was not taught anything about my own people, except how they were taken into slavery after being conquered

We have to hold and protect our own. Imitation, borrowing and adoption in the arts may demean and overshadow our national capabilities. A sober look at the whole condition, disavowing stagnant fashionable viewpoints was offered by conductor Andres Mustonen: Painful processes have taken place in the 20th century. It is consoling, though, that all what has arisen of considered valuable during our long music history, endured, being impossible to destroy. The 20th century turned away from the primary sources, the changes have rather taken place on the surface

right to say no! -was never going to happen again. "You know what I went through. I need control as much as you do." "Sit down, Eva." I stayed on my feet, just to prove my point. His smile widened and my insides melted. "Do you have any idea how crazy I am about you?" he murmured. "You're crazy all right, if you think I'm going to put up with being ordered around, especially sexually." "Come on, Eva. You know I don't want to beat you, punish you, hurt you, demean you, or order you around like a pet. Those aren't needs either of us has." Straightening, Gideon leaned forward and placed his elbows on the desktop. "You're the most important thing in my life. I treasure you. I want to protect you and make you feel safe. That's why we're talking about this." God. How could he be so wonderful and so insane at the same time? "I don't need to be dominated!" "What you need is someone to trust-No. Close your mouth, Eva. You'll wait until I'm finished

whom it had always pleased him to be at variance.--'There, Mrs. Bennet.'--My mind, however, is now made up on the subject, for having received ordination at Easter, I have been so fortunate as to be distinguished by the patronage of the Right Honourable Lady Catherine de Bourgh, widow of Sir Lewis de Bourgh, whose bounty and beneficence has preferred me to the valuable rectory of this parish, where it shall be my earnest endeavour to demean myself with grateful respect towards her ladyship, and be ever ready to perform those rites and ceremonies which are instituted by the Church of England. As a clergyman, moreover, I feel it my duty to promote and establish the blessing of peace in all families within the reach of my influence; and on these grounds I flatter myself that my present overtures are highly commendable, and that the circumstance of my being next in the entail

sistently engaged in artful manipulations of the camp's social environment to ob- serve the effects on group relations. What the researchers learned is that it didn't take much to bring on certain kinds of ill will. Simply separating the boys into two residence cabins was enough to stimulate a "we versus they" feeling between the groups; letting the boys assign names to the two groups (the Eagles and the Rattlers) accelerated the sense of ri- valry. The boys soon began to demean the qualities and accomplishments of the other group; however, these forms of hostility were minor compared to what oc- curred when the experimenters purposely introduced competitive activities into the groups' meetings with one another. Cabin-against-cabin treasure hunts, tugs- of-war, and athletic contests produced name-calling and confrontations. During the competitions, members of the opposing team were labeled "cheaters," "sneaks," and "stinkers
