demonstrated in its existence as an outstanding, exceptionally complete and well preserved example of a medieval northern European trading city that retains the salient features of this unique form of economic and social community to a remarkable degree. Criterion (ii): The Historic Centre of Tallinn, among the most remote and powerful outposts of the colonizing activities of the Hanseatic League in the north-eastern part of Europe in the 13th-16th centuries, provided a crucible within which an international secular-ecclesiastical culture resulting from the interchange of Cistercians, Dominicans, the Teutonic Order and the traditions of the Hanseatic League, formed and was itself exported throughout northern Europe. Criterion (iv): The town plan and the buildings within it constitute a remarkable reflection of the coexistence of the seat of feudal overlords and a Hanseatic trading centre within the shelter of a common system of walls and fortifications. There is also a theory that a fungus called ergot caused the hysteria. It grows on rye and caused hallucinations and bizarre and erratic behaviour. It has been blamed for the `dancing crazes' in Europe in the Middle Ages when loads of people started `dancing' uncontrollably. We will probably never know exactly what happened but the Salem witch trials passed into legend. They formed the basis of Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, which was written in 1953 at the 7 McCarthy's `witch hunts'. After Salem nobody else was executed for witchcraft in America. However in 1706 a woman named Grace Sherwood from Virginia was convicted of witchcraft and sentenced to 8 years in prison. The same year, 1706, one of the 'afflicted' girls, Ann Putnam, apologised to the congregation of her church. She claimed that 'It was a great delusion of Satan that deceived me at that sad time'

son hates him. The play shows that these failures are caused by false dreams and hopes. Clearly one of this false dream is the American Dream. At first willy judges his own value as a human being. He thinks that he is a failure because he can't earn money. As a result he believes he is a double failure. We learn why his son hates him, his father had been fillin his head with false dreams of success, these dreams ruin the son and the father, if willy can't cope anymore. ,,The Crucible"- a very difficult situation. Although it is set in 17th century, new england, it has direct parallels with the 1950's USA. Miller sets his play at the end of 1690's, the setting is the Witchhunting in Salem. It was a period of fear, panic and during this period, a single individual, John Proctor decides to take responsibility for his own actions. 1950's Senator McCarthy and his Witchhunt. Social evil is caused by individuals who do not take responsibility for the world they live in

to eliminate this crucial link to their future strength. Military groups and organizations are by no means exempt from these same processes. The agonies of "boot camp" initiations to the armed services are leg- endary and effective. The novelist William Styron testified to this effectiveness after recounting the misery of his own U.S. Marine concentration-camp-like "training nightmare:" There is no ex-Marine of my acquaintance ... who does not view the training as a crucible out of which he emerged in some way more resilient, simply braver and better for the wear. (Styron, 1977, p. 3) Although the rigors of basic training are widely approved by military brass, a policy of "zero tolerance" is said to exist for incidents of aberrantly harsh hazing like those contained in two videotapes uncovered by TV news sources in 1997. The tapes depicted the practice of "blood pinning," in which marine paratroopers who

the future uninformed by real experience. But for a story or a person's life to move along it is necessary to pierce the bubble of fantasy, and to convert wishing into something else — doing, the next step of the pyramid. T h e essence of movies is the director's command, "Action." Do something, actors. T h e root of the word "actor" is "do-er," someone who does something. Dreams and wishes must be tested in the crucible of reality, in action, by doing. PROGRESSING F R O M W I S H I N G T O W I L L I N G Encountering conflicts and obstacles can force characters to evolve to a yet higher level on the pyramid of emotions, that of willing, which is quite a different mental state than mere wishing. Martial arts and classic philosophies teach people to develop a strong will, so that wishes can be transformed into actions, so that even when

surprising that coincidence brushed cryptography *In its original form, the ciphertext included the stunt characters. This made it difficult to record the ciphertext on paper. The sudden appearance of a figure shift would abruptly convert a literal cryptogram into one of numbers and punctuation marks. A carriage return without a paper feed would result in an overline. To prevent this, Vernam added some circuits that would cause the stunts to print as two-letter groups. in the crucible years of the First World War and just after. Its fabled long arm reached out and tapped four men in four countries. Spurred by the vast wartime use of secret communications, and beckoned by the new age of mechanization, they independently created the machine whose principle is perhaps the most widely used in cryptography today. This principle is that of the wired code-wheel, the rotor. The body of a rotor consists of a thick disk of insulating material,
