Studies have shown that lysozyme have ability to reduce the production of biofilms, but do not have the capacity to destroy the preformed biofilms (Ely et al., 2017). In addition to the tear film there are other protection factors such as epithelium, phagocytic cells, local secretory antibody. Cornea and conjunctiva epithelial surface are an effective barrier against bacteria invasion. Due to the regeneration of epithelial cells take place every 5-7 days, therefore microorganism must stick to cells in order to infect them, and this continuous turnover of epithelial cells slows down bacterial adhesion (Postma et al., 2007). In conclusion tear films are likely one of the most essential mechanisms to avoid fixation and colonization by microorganisms in nature (Ely et al., 2017). Etiology
