97 years in the Christian calendar. The year 1428 AH coincides almost completely with 2007 CE. Islamic holy days fall on fixed dates of the lunar calendar, which means that they occur in different seasons in different years in the Gregorian calendar. The most important Islamic festivals are Eid alFitr on the 1st of Shawwal, marking the end of the fasting month Ramadan, and Eid alAdha on the 10th of Dhu alHijjah, coinciding with the pilgrimage to Mecca. History Islam's historical development resulted in major political, economic, and military effects inside and outside the Islamic world. Within a century of Muhammad's first recitations of the Qur'an, an Islamic empire stretched from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to Central Asia in the east. This new polity soon broke into civil war, and successor states fought each other and outside forces

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

by Artur Kapp, both meritorious Estonian composers. When we want to consider a musical work seriously there must be a considerable core idea: vivid, momentous, profound and absorbing. It may be expressed through different means and not only through a completed conception. We can recognise this when it is evident that there is no equivalent possible in words. Music and speech are two different forms of language: often flowing in parallel, but never coinciding. Creation is simply unexplainable and those who are of the opinion that by analysing music its value can be analysed, have taken a wrong path. Value remains beyond analytical means.2 The first Estonian symphonists (Tobias, Kapp, Lemba) began with a classical- romantic background applying historically defined subdivisions: action, mediation, playfulness, and closure. With all this complexity there must be for the listener a 1

recognize sentence meanings independently of assigning them verification conditions. And it is not clear just what we should count as the "empiri- cal" data on which the principle is based. Survey results from street corners? Dictionary definitions? (Never that.) One's own linguistic "intuitions"? (Also, the Verification Principle's own meaning would then, by the principle itself, coincide with its own verification condition, the set of experiences as of meanings coinciding with verification conditions; that is a nasty tangle, though I am unsure whether it is ultimately vicious.) At any rate, the self-application problem is a real one, not just a superficial trick question. 3 Objection 5 Erwin (1970) offers an argument to show that every statement is verifiable, trivially and in much the same way. Suppose we are presented with a funny- looking machine that turns out to be a marvelous predictor. Namely, when

shows on television are typically launched in September, time of the fall equinox. Going to movies with family at holiday times or watching particular holiday films like It's a Wonderful Life each year is an emotional tradition for many people. Certain kinds o f movies seem to be associated with specific seasons. In general we like love stories and sport stories in the spring and summer, while more thoughtful dramas tend to be released in fall and winter. T h e winter solstice, roughly coinciding with the Christmas and N e w Year's holidays, is a good time to release big fantasy pictures, especially those that comprise trilogies that can be run over successive year-end holi days. Summer is the time for the blockbusters and action pictures. THE POWER OF THE SEASONS W e are not so conscious of the seasons these days since we are somewhat insulated from their effects, and most of us no longer live by the rhythms of planting and harvesting
