He unlocked the double-door entrance to usher me inside, and I could feel his anxiety as he watched for my reaction. Gideon's home was as beautiful as the man himself. It was so very different from his office, which was sleek, modern, and cool. "No. He carved this himself. It hung on the wall above the pulpit in the vicarage where he preached." I wasn't sure if my face betrayed my shock, but I returned to gazing at the simple, ancient cross, just in case. I quickly did the mental math; the cross was over three hundred and seventy years old. The silence stretched on as I struggled to wrap my mind around the concept of so many years. "Are you all right?" He sounded worried. "How old is Carlisle

Something had happened to make them like their cafeteria's food significantly better than before. Interestingly, the event that caused them to shift their opinions had nothing to do with the quality of the food service, which had not changed a whit. But its availability had. On the day of the second survey, the students had learned that, because of a fire, they could not eat at the cafeteria for the next two weeks (West, 1975). Collectors of everything from baseball cards to antiques are keenly aware of the scarcity principle's influence in determining the worth of an item.
