How can cooperation/altruism evolve?
· If the recipient of the altruistic act benefits, it is going to leave more offsprings
· The actor however is n to going to leave more offspring, or even fewer offspring fewer
altruists in the next generation.
· If such behaviour is heritable, and it goes many generations, it will ultimately die out.
Cooperation is a paradox (mystery) in evolutionary theory
Types of cooperation
· Byproduct mutualism (mother-child)
· Kin selection (brother, sister)
· Positive reciprocity
o Vampire bats vomiting blood for the bas who have not found blood (otherwise
the bat will die). Usually its female vampire bats who donate blood.
