By the end of the 7 th century all the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxon Britain accepted the Christian faith. 3.) Describe Old English Poetry in terms of form and content. Old English poetry is highly formal. Each line of it is divides into two halves, separated by a caesura, or pause, and is often represented by a gap on the page. The verse form contains complicated rules for alliteration designed to help scops, or poets, remember the many thousands lines they were required to know ny heart. Each of the two halves of an Anglo-Saxon line contains two stressed syllables, and an alliterative must be carried over across the caesura. Often features a distinctive set of rhetorical devices, like the kenning. 4.) Who is the Venerable Bede and what is he famous for?

almost a century and a half (1337-1485) The Renaissance in England may be divided into 3 parts: the rise of the R. under early Tudor monarchs, the height of R. under Elizabeth I, the decline of the R. under the Stuart monarchs. 6. The first manifestations of the Renaissance in English literature. The first major impact of the Renaissance on English literature is observable in the poetry of Wyatt and Surrey, who introduced and Anglicized the sonnet, a verse form that has proved to be both popular and durable. Surrey is credited also with inventing English blank verse. Other verse forms, borrowed from the Italian and French, had a lesser impact. Elaborate Renaissance conventions of love poetry were also transplanted, finding their outlet chiefly in sonnets and sonnet sequences. 7. Which events diminished the power of the Catholic Church in England? Two events occurred that were inimical to the influence of the Catholic Church. The 1st

Revolutionary period literature 17661799 Geographical lines were now forgotten, the literature of this period is no longer local. Literature presents the vivid reflection of that momentous struggle for independence upon which the American colonies had entered. Fiery speeches, able arguments set forth in newspapers and in pamphlets, sharp and bitter satire. From the beginning of the conflict to the end, there was a copious flow of verse which sprang naturally enough from the turbulence of popular excitement and emotion. Estonian culture developed in earnest during the nineteenth-century period of national awakening. Elements of Estonian peasant culture, such as songs and folktales, were brought together by the country's first cultural elite after 1850. Between 1857 and 1861, Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald compiled and published the Estonian national epic, Kalevipoeg (Son of Kalev), which was based on various folklore themes. Written in verse, the epic tells the story of Kalevipoeg, the mythical ancient ruler of Estonia. Another achievement of this period was the establishment of Estonia's first regularly published Estonian-language newspaper, Perno Postimees , originally published in Pärnu by Johann Voldemar Jannsen in 1857. In 1878 Carl Robert Jakobson established the newspaper Sakala , which would soon become a major promoter of the cultural renaissance. Jakob Hurt, a schoolteacher and Lutheran minister,

Teda mõjutasid palju ka Jakobsoni isamaalised kõned ja Faehlmanni "Kalevipoeg" ning Lydia Koidula luuletuse. Peamine oli see , et ta oli eestimeelne. After the Crucifixion he is first buried and then raised up and honored (like Christ). The vision has come full circle and now the dreamer can also hope to participate, as one ordinary tree has done, in that victory. The poem ends in a mood of confidence. Now the dreamer can bear solitude and the loss of friends on earth though he sees the way open to a `heavenly home'. 3. The Gen. Charst. Of OE poetry and prose. The distinction between verse and prose is by no mean always clear in that period of time. Anglo-Saxon verse is the product of a tradition which reached far back into pre-literate times and which was challenged and eventually replaced after the Conquest by a quite different tradition, so to say Eng poetry began with an end. But by contrast, the earliest monuments of English prose represent the true beginning of a tradition of written prose. But indeed the only work of

John Keats was one of the principal poets of the English Romantic movement. During his short life, his work received constant critical attacks from periodicals of the day, but his posthumous influence on poets such as Alfred Tennyson has been immense. Elaborate word choice and sensual imagery characterize Keats's poetry; including a series of odes that were his masterpieces and which remain among the most popular poems in English literature. Ode is a form of stately and elaborate lyrical verse. A classic ode is structured in three parts: the strophe, the antistrophe, and the epode. Different forms such as the homostrophic ode and the irregular ode also exist. 8. A Defence of Poetry by Shelley: Main ideas: poetry brings about moral good, exercises and expands the imagination, and the imagination is the source of sympathy, compassion, and love, which rest on the ability to project oneself into the position of another person. 9

He accurately described the underside of the American dream of the self-made man and showed the price of materialism and excessive competition loneliness and alienation. Themes of death-in-life, especially being buried alive or returning from the grave, appear in many of his works ("The Fall of the House of Usher"). His most famous stories are his ,,ratiocinative" stories, known as detective tales ("The Murders in the Rue Morgue"). · His verse was very musical and strictly metrical. The poems essence should be beauty and that sadness was the mood most in keeping with the poetic beauty. Poe's poetry did not tell on American tradition. ,,Out of space and out of time" this is what Poe himself said about his work. He made it a rule never to write long epic poems. He thought that "a poem must be comfortably read at one sitting, for, if two sittings are required, the affairs of the world interfere" ("To Helen"; "Annabel Lee";

Very decent, like Charles’s court. Characteristic to Charles I’s court Carew: Sir John Suckling: The Constant Lover Richard Lovelace: celebrates the beauties of heroine, but against very different background. To Althea, from Prison: Song; The Grasshopper: To My Noble Friend, Mr Charles Cotton: Ode Waller: wrote of queen as the queen of love. Cowley: Robert Herrick: The Argument of His Book, Delight in Disorder 6. The Caroline „beauty of holiness” Sermons and religious verse, witty preaching. George Herbert, Caroline piety expressed. His verse is sensitive and decorous, monument to „beauty of holiness”, practice of liturgy with good order and ritual which was the essence of Charles I’s religious policy. High Anglican piety. Herbert celebrates wat Puritans wished to sweep away. Beauty and significance of ritual, of the mystery of the sacraments offering praise to the angles, to the saints and Virgin Mary
He suggests Egeus and Demetrius get married. He cites classic stories as models for "the course of true love", and thinks the effects of the love juice are the workings of his own "reason". Evaluation For my oppinion Shakespeare has made a very good play.Anybody who likes a bit of fantasy and fairy tale, like I do, will love this. It is real escape from the everyday and is very easy to read, as far as Shakespeare plays go. The language of the characters likewise occurs in a mix: the verse or poetry of the love-struck couples and the homespunand often humorous--prose of the bumbling tradesmen.Set in a magical forest, the play is all about match making and infidelity, mischief and romance. All of the characters are strong and have wonderful personalities.I would really recommend this book to anyone trying to get into Shakespeare or anybody fed up of reading books about modern London, and breaking-up families. The most attractive decoration to go with the folk costume is the set of silver jewellery: numerous necklaces and a conic brooch worn by married women. The handicraft of Seto women is fine and colourful. Seto people are known for their original runic verse folk song - leelo. A Leelo choir consists of a chanter and the choir. The chanter is a good improviser. The verses recited by the chanter are repeated by the choir. One of the singers in the choir sings the kille - the highest pitch. The most outstanding chanters came to be called lauluimä (the mother of songs). The best chanters were able to recite 10 000 - 20 000 verses. The Seto folk dance is called kargus. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in English, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English language writer to receive the prize. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. Later in life Kipling came to be recognized as a "prophet of British imperialism." Many saw prejudice and
aastal. 8 KASUTATUD ALLIKAD http://www.hot.ee/elmakunnapas/visnalugu.htm http://www.ut.ee/verse/index.php?m=authors&aid=17 http://www.hot.ee/elmakunnapas/visnalooming.htm http://www.kirmus.ee/erni/foto/visn02x.html http://www.kirmus.ee/erni/foto/visn05x.html http://www.kirmus.ee/erni/foto/visn08x.html http://www.kirmus.ee/erni/foto/visn09y.html http://www.kirmus.ee/erni/foto/visn11y.html http://www.kirmus.ee/erni/rmtk/visn/hv_amor.html 9
The laws of metre are studied by prosody (science of versification). English metre is a combination of the number of syllables and the number of stresses regularly occurring throughout poetic lines. Metrical patterns: in a line stressed and unstressed syllables cling to each other forming a foot (the number of syllables can be 2 or 3, but not less than 2 or more than 3; and the one syllable must be stressed). There are 5 kinds of feet in English verse: verse 1. iambic iambus (1 unstressed and 1 stressed syllable), 2. trochaic trochee (the stressed syllable is followed by the unstressed one), 3. dactylic dactyl (1 stressed syllable is followed by 2 unstressed), 4. amphibrachic amphibrach (1 stressed syllable between 2 unstressed ones), 5
The phrase becomes almost inspirational and continually reminds people that equality is obtainable, making the phrase the rally cry for the movement. The phrase "let freedom ring" is repeated throughout the speech as well, this phrase comes from the well known song "My Country 'tis of Thee" which was considered America's national anthem before the ‘’Star-Spangled Banner’’. By including this phrase throughout the speech, along with the entire first verse, Martin Luther King attempts to unite the people with a common dream of freedom by using an inspirational lyric that is well known across America. Repeating such phrases makes the speech more memorable and compelling. The use of symbolism is also prevalent throughout this speech. This can easily be seen in the following sentence: ‘’I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be

women, so Larkin did see women as objects. Larkin did not want to grow old. And because of that he is also depicting his childhood in his poems, for example in ´´Triple Time´´ and in ´´I Remember, I Remember.´´ In ´´ I Remember, I Remember´´ he is saying that things went wrong from the very start. When the things are wrong already in the beginning, then it's hard to fix them or live a normal life. That is what he is also saying in ´´This be the Verse.´´ The poem is about different generations. And how we are fucked up by our parents and our parents were fucked up by their parents. And the best thing to do is not have any children. He says that man hands on misery to a man and the best thing to do is not have any children of your own. I think that with his last line /And don't have any kinds yourself/ he is not being pessimistic but he is warning the next generation. Basically
