They consume less than the minimum amount of calories essential for sound health and growth. Socially, the lack of food erodes relationships and feeds shame so that those most in need of support are often least able to call on it. What causes hunger? Crops don't grow if there is no rain and families can't feed themselves. People who are poor can't buy food when their crops fail. They have nothing to fall back on.
