Tallinn University TURKEY AND THE EUROPEAN UNION Tallinn 2013 INTRODUCTION The accession negotiations and the forthcoming Turkish accession present challenges to both Turkey and the EU. It is widely accepted that Turkey's accession would be different from previous enlargements because of the combined impact of Turkey's population, size, geographical location, economic, security and military potential. The case of Turkey will be different and more challenging from previous accessions for a number of reasons, some of them are presented below. Turkey is a country with a large population and geographic area. With a population of 74 million today, it is projected that it could be the largest member state at the time of accession. As a Moslem secular country, Turkey will also add a new demographic and religious dimension to the EU. Also, the presence of a large number of Turkish

Cape Cod for a start, and then set about reconnoitring the hinterland for sustenance. Had it not been for friendlier native Americans who taught them their skills, the Pilgrims might never have survived. The natives acted as guides through the forests and taught the colonists woodcraft, trapping, hunting, how to make maple sugar, moccasins and birch-bark canoes and how to raise crops of maize and tobacco. They also introduced the colonists to the turkey, which was native to North America. This aid, however, came too late for half the colonists, who died during their first punishing winter in Massachusetts, but the following year, the survivors showed they had learned their lessons well. In the autumn of 1621, they produced their first successful harvest and in gratitude, celebrated their first Thanksgiving . Thanksgiving became a national holiday in the United States

corn, pumpkin and beans. The Pilgrims had a good harvest. Governor William Bradford issued a proclamation establishing a day of Thanksgiving to God. The first Thanksgiving was cooked and served out-of-doors. The celebration lasted for 3 days.It was successful. Thanksgiving Day was established by the United States Congress as a legal federal holiday. Many of the traditions come from that first Thankgiving celebration. Today, for many Americans, Thanksgiving is a four-day holiday. People eat turkey, squash, corn. Pumpkin pie and Indian pudding are traditional Thanksgiving desserts. It is the most important holiday in America.
Because of this help they had a good harvest every year. Governor William Bradford invited the Pilgrims and the Indians to share a Thanksgiving feast to strengthen the bond between them. They accepted. The celebration lasted 3 days. The holiday was a great success. Later, Thanksgiving was celebrated in all the colonies of New England. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it a national thanksgiving. The modern Thanksgiving turkey is much like the ones hunted in Plymouth. Squash, corn, pumpkin pie and Indian pudding appear on the Thanksgiving table. Today Thanksgiving lasts for 4 days. It's a family day and also a day of hospitality and giving.

Christmas in Australia Christmas in Australia is often very hot. Whereas the northern hemisphere is in the middle of winter, Australians are baking in summer heat. It is not unusual to have Christmas Day well into the mid 30 degrees Celsius, or near 100 degrees Fahrenheit. A traditional meal includes a turkey dinner, with ham, and pork. A flaming Christmas plum pudding is added for dessert. In the Australian gold rushes, Christmas puddings often contained a gold nugget. Today a small favor is baked inside. Whoever finds this knows s/he will enjoy good luck. Another treat is Mince Pies. Some Australians and particularly tourists often have their Christmas dinner at midday on a local beach, Bondi Beach in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs attracts thousands of people on Christmas Day

Hagia Sophia Hagia Sophia is a former patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Famous for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture. It was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years, until the completion of the Seville Cathedral in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 A.D. on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, and was in fact the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site. It was designed by two architects.
