The Tudors Tudor Period began when Henry VII (Henry of Tudor) of the House of York defeated Richard III of the House of Lancaster in the Wars of Roses and he was crowned as the King of England. Henry VII united the two rival houses and started the Tudor dynasty. During Henry's reign the medieval period came to a close. There was a revival, or Renaissance, of learning, partly as a result of the printing press, which ended the Church's monopoly of learning....

US-ART - American Art Revision Materials, I

There were 4 reasons: settlers came from backgrounds where art was unusual, Protestant attitudes was averse to imagery and painting, the English were not yet distinguished in visual arts and religious art was non-existent. The colonial period is almost entirely limited to portraiture (deemed as `useful' by settlers). These first paintings were made by limners and artisans without formal training and were based on what was popular in England during the Tudors . The paintings are technically unskilled, strongly patterned, flat and linear. Spanish painting in America was mostly religious. In C18, painting was a luxury and necessitated wealth that had by then become available. Portraitures remained at the forefront because the rich could thusly display their status and because it was less "frivolous" than other forms of painting. In early-C18, Baroque was imitated (handsome settings, rich chiaroscuro, rich color and painterly execution)....

BRITISH NATIONAL SYMBOLS

Andrew of Scotland (the white diagonal cross on blue background) and the Cross of St. Patrick of Northern Ireland (red diagonal cross on white background). The Welsh Dragon (red dragon on a white-over-green field), on the other hand, is not represented in the British flag. Although the white and green colours in the Welsh flag have old roots as the livery colours of the Tudors , the flag was officially recognised only in the 1950s, which is one reason for its exclusion on the Union Jack. St. George's Cross, as an emblem, can be traced back to the 14 th century, when in 1348 Edward III made St. George the patron saint of the Order of the Garter. Later, after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, Henry V ordered all soldiers siding with the English in military action to wear a band of St. George. The earliest reference to the distinct Saltire (diagonal) Cross of St...
