Kiek in de Kök

Kiek in de Kök is an old German language nickname for towers, mainly those that formed parts of town fortifications. They gained the name from the ability of tower occupants to see into kitchens of nearby houses. Due to the history of the Hanseatic League and the Teutonic Order, also towers far outside modern Germany bear this name, like in Gdask and Tallinn. The tower in Tallinn is an artillery tower built in 1475.The walls are 4 m thick but the tower was then lower than today. The waterproof upper floor made of cobblestones was open and had 22 embrasures in its parapet. The parapet must have been covered by some kind of a roof but the middle part of the floor was uncovered to get the mortars and catapults in place better.

Summary of Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name. It has become an iconic symbol of London. The bridge consists of two towers which are tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways which are designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The

Famous castles of Scotland

Its maintenance is the responsibility of Historic Scotland.Crookston Castle sits atop a natural hill.To the north is a steep drop to the Levern Water. The castle has a rectangular main block, which was strengthened by a tower at each corner. This formed an irregular 'X-plan' shape, an unusual layout also seen at Hermitage Castle. Only the north-east corner tower survives to its former height, as well as the basement of the south-east tower. The two western towers were destroyed in the 15th century and never rebuilt, repairs in the 19th century have obscured even the remains of these. The main body of the castle measures about 19m by 12m, with walls up to 3.7m thick, and the north-east tower is around 6m square. The entrance is on the north side, adjacent to the north-east tower, and defended by a portcullis and two doors. A straight mural stair leads up to the right, while ahead is a barrel-vaulted basement with slit windows and a well

London - The City and Beyond

London. This is where the Romans founded Londinium almost two thousand years ago. The City covers about 2,6 square km (1 square mile) and is often called the Square Mile. Today, the City of London is one of the world's most important business and financial centres, with over 500 banks. Over 400 000 people work within the Square Mile during weekdays and it is a crowded and noisy place. The Barbican Centre is a very big complex of buildings, towers, garages and walkways. It was built in the 70s and most Londoners don't like the way it looks. It is the largest performing arts centre in Europe and home to two symphony orchestras, and art gallery and the amazing Museum of London. Fleet Street once was a road between the City and Westminster. Then it became the centre of publishing and newspaper business for centuries. The Daily Courant was the first newspaper published there.

Town, which were separated by a dividing wall since medieval times. The elevated area of Toompea Hill with its castle was occupied by the residences of Tallinn's rulers and gentry. The Lower Old Town meanwhile developed as an autonomous merchantile centre, flourishing during the 13th-16th centuries, when the city enjoyed membership of the powerful Hanseatic Trading League. Generally speaking these two districts are now collectively referred as the Old Town. The Town wall and towers Medieval fortresses, which emerged during the development of the medieval town at the end of the 13th century, surrounded the city centre as a closed defence zone. By the 16th century, Tallinn's defence system was one of the most powerful in Northern Europe. The city wall was three meters thick, sixteen meters high, and four kilometres long, completely encircling the city with 46 defence towers. The portion of the wall that has survived is two

Old Tallinn

In 1918, Estonia declared independence from Russia and fought a bitter war against Bolshevik Russia. Independence didn’t last long, however, and the fledgling nation fell first to the Nazis and then the Soviets during World War II. Despite all this conquering, Tallinn’s historic core has survived remarkably intact. Much of the 14th century city wall still stands, including a couple of stretches where you can climb the narrow spiral staircases of the towers and end up on the medieval catwalk. The Viru Gates, flanked by thin pointed towers from the 14th century, makes a nice entrance into Old Town. Dominating the town atop Toompea Hill is Toompea Castle and Pikk Hermann Tower. It was used as the center of government since 1229 and is now the site of Estonia’s parliament. Nearby stands the inappropriately named Maiden’s Tower that used to house a prison for prostitutes. There are several interesting old houses of worship. The oldest is the

Tallinn-topic

Tallinn, the capital city of the Republic of Estonia and of the Harju county, is a town in North Estonia on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. It has nearly half a million inhabitants and covers an area of almost 160 sqkm. It is also an important economic and cultural centre and one of the main ports in the Baltic States. Tallinn is one of the oldest cities on the Baltic Sea. It is unique for its well-preserved architecture from the 13-15 centuries. In contrast to the ancient town-walls and towers, Tallinn of today offers modern hotels, restaurants, sport and cultural centres. Every five years national song and folk dance festivals take place in Tallinn. The yachting regatta of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games was held at Pirita. History Tallinn means in English "Danish town". The place is believed to have been settled by Finno-Ugric people about 2500 BC. The City on London

For a while London probably lay in ruins, but it eventually developed again, partly because of its position on the river was good for trading. The Tower of London There is more of London's history in the Tower than anywhere else in London. It is the oldest surviving building in the capital. The Tower of London was begun by William the Conqueror in 1078 as a castle and a palace but even before the site had been used by the Romans and Anglo-Saxons. The tower comprises not one, but 20 towers, the oldest, the White Tower, dates back to the 11 th Century. The Roman stone wall, parts of which can still be seen on the territory of the Tower, may have been a small Roman fort near the river. The White Tower, called so on account of the white Caen stone Brought from Normandy, is the original Norman stronghold. It is the central building of the Tower of London. The white tower has three small square towers and one round one. Later other buildings were added

commercial development in the East End of London led to a requirement for a new river crossing downstream of London Bridge. · Subway Committee was formed in 1876, chaired by Sir Albert Joseph Altman, to find a solution to the river crossing problem. It opened the design of the crossing to public competition. Over 50 designs were submitted. · Jones' engineer, Sir John Wolfe Barry, devised the idea of a bascule bridge 800 feet (244 m) in length with two towers each 213 feet (65 m) high, built on piers. The central span of 200 feet (61 m) between the towers was split into two equal leaves, which could be raised to an angle of 83 degrees to allow river traffic to pass. The leaves, weighing over 1,000 tons each, were balanced to minimize the force required and allow raising in five minutes. · Jones died in 1887 and George D. Stevenson took over the project. · Stevenson replaced Jones' original brick

According to the legend it´s the tumulus mound over the grave of the national hero Kalev, erected stone by stone in his memory by his grieving wife Linda. Kolm vaatlusväärsust inglismaal

This famous historical site has been the living quarters of monarchs. It has been a site of imprisonment and execution of many traitors, clergymen, nobles and framed members of the royal court and was also an armory, treasury, zoo and mint. Today it houses the crown jewels and has a museum filled with armor, weapons and implements of torture. Another popular tourist sight is the London eye. Constructed by British Airways, it towers 135 meters above the banks of the Thames River. It is located near Big Ben and Westminster Abbey, on the opposite bank, adjacent to London's county hall. Views from the eye are spectacular and on a clear day most of London can be seen. If there's only one museum that can be seen, the British Museum is the one to visit. This museum has some of the largest collections on human culture and history. It is the home of the Rosetta Stone and has
