Taj Mahal

griefstricken when his third wife died during the birth of their fourteenth child. In her dying breath, his wife urged him to build a mausoleum for her that the world has never seen before. Shah Jahan granted his wife's wish and the constructions started one year after her death with the principal mausoleum completed in 1648. The surrounding buildings and garden were finished five years later. Architecture The focus of the Taj Mahal is the white marble tomb, which stands on a square plinth consisting of a symmetrical building with an iwan, an arch-shaped doorway, topped by a large dome. The base structure is a large, multi-chambered structure. The base is essentially a cube with chamfered edges and is roughly 55 meters on each side (see floor plan, right). On the long sides, a massive pishtaq, or vaulted archway, frames the iwan with a similar arch-shaped balcony. The main dome is crowned by a gilded spire or finial

there is no basis for assuming the king suffered from mental illness he showed clear signs of a narcissistic personality, and towards the end of his reign "Richard's grasp on reality was becoming weaker". Richard promised to bring an end to the Hundred Years' War that Edward III had started. Writers agreed that Richard was a "most beautiful king", though with a "face which was white, rounded and feminine", implying he lacked manliness. He was athletic and tall; when his tomb was opened in 1871 he was found to be six feet tall. He was also intelligent and well read, but when agitated he had a tendency to stammer. Michelangelo

Shortly thereafter, he created one of his most important works, the statue of David, and a commissioned piece symbolizing the freedom of the republic of Florence. Michelangelo truly had achieved fame as an artist, and his talent became sought after by Pope Julius II, who asked him to go on a very artistic ship-journey, a commission to paint the ceiling of the Sistine chapel in Vatican. At first, Michelangelo, who had been busy painting frescos in Pope Julius' tomb, refused his descendant's request, feeling that the undertaking of such a monumental task would take him away from sculpturing but the Pope insisted, and his word prevailed. Ironically, Michelangelo's work on the chapel ceiling broadened from the original request, which called for twelve paintings. Instead, he covered the entire ceiling with over 300 figures. The next big project for Michelangelo was to paint the altar wall by Pope Clement VII, shortly before his death

Giza Pyramid

Most accepted construction theories are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place. There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The lowest chamber is cut into the bedrock upon which the pyramid was built and was unfinished. The so-called Queen's Chamber and King's Chamber are higher up within the pyramid structure. Building of the Great pyramid of Giza It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for Fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh Khufu around 2540 BC. It is thought that, at construction, the Great Pyramid was originally 146.59 metres tall but with erosion, its current height is 138.74 metres. The total mass of the pyramid is about 5.9 million tonnes. Based on these estimates, building this in 20 years would involve installing about 800 tonnes of stone every day. The pyramid remained the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years Pyramid complex

The Domician Monastery

His intellectual stature is indicative of the quality of the monastery's leadership. The offerings made on the occasion of such family festivals made a significant contribution to the monastery's finances. The various guilds gave gifts when their feast days were celebrated. The Merchant Guild, for example, each year in December gave the friars a tun of meat, a tun of codfish, and a tun of peas. Rich burgers left legacies to the monastery for the privilege of having a family tomb in the church, But these did not suffice to sustain all those whom the monastery housed. The friars, in consequence, becaipe farmers and fish-mongers. In addition they ran a brewery, which produced four different kinds of beer. In northern Europe beer occupied the place enjoyed by wine in the south, and was a staple element of both the monastic and secular diet. The monastery also drew profit from the veneration of relics

According to Estonian folklore, Olev, the man who built the church, fell down and got killed when he was putting finishing touches to the spire. A toad and a serpent sprang out of his mouth. Olev was buried on the very spot where he died. A stone block with the carved figure of Olev, a toad and a serpent, was placed on his tomb. St Olaf's Church was a Roman Catholic one up to 1524. the new Gothic style, invented in northern France. Henry spent a lot of of his own money on the project. No other medieval monarch ever spent as much on a single church as Henry did at Westminster. The French churches inspired Henry to rebuild Westminster Abbey, as a way of rivalling the king of France and restoring the prestige of the English monarchy. He also built it to honour St Edward the Confessor and for his own tomb as well. *Simon de Montfort's Parliament of 1265 De Montfort's Parliament was an English parliament of 1265, summoned by Simon de Montfort. His army had met and defeated the royal forces at the Battle of Lewes. The rebels captured Prince Edward, and the parliament had to agree to a constitution formulated by Simon.

Kuulsaim agoraa on 1931. aasta väljakaevamistel põhjalikult läbiuuritud akropolise lähedal asuv Ateena agoraa. Plato...

How stand I then, That have a father kill'd, a mother stain'd, Excitements of my reason and my blood, And let all sleep? while, to my shame, I see The imminent death of twenty thousand men, That, for a fantasy and trick of fame, Go to their graves like beds, fight for a plot 139 Whereon the numbers cannot try the cause, Which is not tomb enough and continent To hide the slain? O, from this time forth, My thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth! Exit 140 SCENE V. Elsinore. A room in the castle. Enter QUEEN GERTRUDE, HORATIO, and a Gentleman QUEEN GERTRUDE I will not speak with her. Gentleman She is importunate, indeed distract: Her mood will needs be pitied. ON A DAY nearly 4,000 years ago, in a town called Menet Khufu bordering the thin ribbon of the Nile, a master scribe sketched out the hieroglyphs that told the story of his lord's life—and in so doing he opened the recorded history of cryptology. His was not a system of secret writing as the modern world knows it; he used no fully developed code of hieroglyphic symbol substitutions. His inscription, carved about 1900 B.C. into the living rock in the main chamber of the tomb of the nobleman Khnumhotep II, merely uses some unusual hieroglyphic symbols here and there in place of the more ordinary ones. Most occur in the last 20 columns of the inscription's 222, in a section recording the monuments that Khnumhotep had erected in the service of the pharaoh Amenemhet II. The intention was not to make it hard to read the text. It was to impart a dignity and authority to it, perhaps in the same way that a government proclamation will spell out "In the year of Our Lord One

clients not with the gods but with their ancient enemies, the Titans. T h e y were truly challenging the gods by this choice. M a n y people felt, even before the ship sailed, that the builders were tempting fate to give the ship such a grandiose name. Even worse was to claim that it was unsinkable. T h a t was a foolish blasphemy, challenging the almighty power of God. A superstitious aura surrounds the Titanic, something like the curse of KingTut's tomb, a belief that the builders called down the wrath of God by their arrogance and pride. T h e story of the Titanic resonates with an old literary concept, T h e Ship of Fools. Storytellers created this satirical form around the time of Columbus' first voy age to the N e w World. One of the first expressions was Sebastian Brant's narrative poem, "Das Narrenschiff," printed only two years after Columbus first successfully crossed the Atlantic
