Kütuseelemendid on vastavalt töötemperatuurile: 1. madaltemperatuursed (kuni 80 °C), 2. keskmise- (kuni 500 °C) ja 3. kõrgtemperatuursed (6001200 °C) Vastavalt tööprintsiibile ja elektrolüüdi keemilisele koostisele on tänapäeva kütuseelemendid jaotatavad neljaks põhitüübiks: 4. polümeerelektrolüütmembraaniga kütuseelement (PEKE), 5. fosforhappe kütuseelement (PHKE), 6. sulatatud karbonaatkütuseelement (SKKE) ja 7. tahke oksiidkütuseelement (TOKE).
