Mount Kailash, Tibet Martina Kroon History Mount Kailash is a striking peak in the Himalayan mountains of western Tibet. According to Hindu mythology, Shiva, the god of destruction and regeneration, resides at the summit of a legendary mountain named Kailash. Mount Kailash is regarded in many sects of Hinduism as Paradise, the ultimate destination of souls and the spiritual center of the world. Pilgrimage Every year, thousands make a pilgrimage to Kailash. Pilgrims of several religions believe that walking all the way around Mount Kailash on foot is a holy ritual that will bring good fortune.
Tibet Tibet is a plateau region in Asia, north of the Himalayas, and the home to the indigenous Tibetan people and some other ethnic groups. With an average elevation of 4,900 metres, it is the highest region on Earth and has in recent decades increasingly been referred to as the "Roof of the World". In the history of Tibet, it has been an independent country, divided into different countries, and a part of China each for a certain amount of time. Tibet was first unified under King Songtsän Gampo in the seventh century. A government nominally headed by the Dalai Lamas, a line of spiritual leaders, ruled a large portion of the Tibetan region at various times from the 1640s until 1950s. During most of this period, the Tibetan administration was subordinate to the Chinese empire of the Qing Dynasty. The 13th Dalai Lama proclaimed Tibet independent in 1913, but this declaration was not accepted by China. Furthermore, Tibet

Facts: The Taj Mahal was constructed using materials from all over India and Asia. Over 1,000 elephants were used to transport building materials during the construction. The translucent white marble was brought from Rajasthan, the jasper from Punjab, jade and crystal from China. The turquoise was from Tibet and the Lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, while the sapphire came from Sri Lanka and the carnelian from Arabia. In all, twenty eight types of precious and semi-precious stones were inlaid into the white marble. Exterior decoration The exterior decorations of the Taj Mahal are among the finest to be found in Mughal architecture.
