style of fiction, scientific prose, newspapers, business correspondence, etc.). STYLISTICS Stylistics is the study of style. The very term "stylistics" came in more common use in English only some 45 years ago. Stylistics is a part of style; it studies principles of selecting and using different linguistic means (grammatical and phonetic) that serve to render shades of meaning. The Stylistics of language studies stylistic devices and expressive shades of linguistic units (words, construction of phrases). The Stylistics of speech studies individual texts viewing the way the message or content is expressed. Literary Stylistics concentrates on artistic expressiveness that characterizes a literary work, a writer, or a whole time period. Linguistic Stylistics studies linguistic facts from the point of view of their ability to convey extra shades of meaning (connotations we call them)....

Anglo - Saxon

Later, the unburned body was depodited in a rectangular grave. Graves were also commonly furnished with goods including jewellery, ornaments, brooches, beads, girdle-hangers and weaponry. Pottery and other vessels are sometimes found, as are toilet-sets, knives and amuletic items. Contribution Anglo-Saxon art contributed some distinctive iconographic forms to the artistic mainstream and also stylistic elements. Manuscript painting made a major contribution to the evolution of Romanesque and, ultimately, Gothic art. The early Anglo-Saxon period is notable for its cemeteries, most of which are found in the southern and eastern parts of England. There is a substantial Anglo-Saxon contribution to the modern English gene pool - a large- scale population movement or immigration in the early Anglo-Saxon period. Readers today approach the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf with cultural preconceptions very...

Fame is a Fickle Food

Stylistically it is a very lovely poem. It flows nicely, although there is an abrupt change of pace in the last line, but that also carries a significance - to highlight the importance of the last sentence. She has also comprised the stanzas very logically the main idea carries over very well. Dickinson has not used too complex metaphors or stylistic devices, which sometimes make a poem harder to read. I enjoyed the poem, especially because I agree with the main idea - one should not waste one's life running after something as obscure as fame. I also liked the way she brought the abstract notion of 'fame' to a very down-to-earth form. Using food as a metaphor for fame she very successfully brought the whole idea of the poem closer to the reader....

Literary analyses of Beowulf

One can find several kennings, typical Anglo-Saxon compound metaphors, such as "From captive of hell", "Shepherd-of-evils", "Hardy-in-fight", "The bone-frame", "Keen-souled" etc. In addition to kennings there are also many ordinary metaphors like "The accursed" and "The outlaw", these two referring to Grendel. For the sake of emphasis, parallelism has been brought to play. The repetition of the same idea is a constantly used stylistic device. For example "No keenest blade, no farest of falchions", "That here was the last of life, an end of his days on earth", "Swallowed him piecemeal: swiftly thus the lifeless corse was clean devoured" have more or less the same meaning in both parts of the phrase. Another interesting characteristic of Anglo-Saxon literature is the rarity of similes. There are altogether only five similes in the entire epic and one of them -...

Inglise keele stilistika

" Stylistics English stylistics or the study of style has not been discussed on the same scale as french stylistics, german or russian. The very term stylistics came into more common use in english only some 30-40 years ago. It was however recorded much earlier that is in 1882 for the first time, meaning ,,The Study of literary style, the study of stylistic features." A short history of the development of stylistics Stylistics is regarded a relatively new branch of philology, yet its roots go back as far as ancient Greece and Rome, where the rhetoricians (retoorikud) cultivated the art of clear and elegant use of language by developing and polishing stylistic devices. In the 18th century, an individualistic-psychological view on style and stylistics emerges. The late 19th and and early 20th centuries witnessed a utilitarian approach to stylistics...

The descriptive feedback is comprised of a suite of programs that evaluate and, subsequently, flag essays for errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics; identify an essay's discourse structure; and, recognize undesirable stylistic features. As the population of English language learners (ELL) grows, researchers are working on enhancements to the grammatical error detection component to accommodate the kinds of mistakes more common in the ELL population. This kind of feedback includes determiner and preposition errors, and collocation errors (e.g., "strong computer" instead of "powerful computer").Criterion offers a pre-writing (planning) utility. This emphasis on planning was a logical outgrowth of the process-writing...

Right now it has copyright under the united kingdom crown copyright but it is not enforced outside united kingdom. 5.CRITICISM The Authorized Version is notably more Latinate than previous English versions, especially the Geneva Bible. This results in part from the academic stylistic preferences of a number of the translators--several of whom admitted to being more comfortable writing in Latin than in English. Hence, where the Geneva Bible might use a common English word--the Authorized Version tends rather to prefer a technical term, frequently in Anglicised Latin. While the Authorized Version remains among the most widely sold, modern critical New Testament translations differ substantially from it in a number of passages....
