To swear or not to swear ?

howstuffworks.com/swearing1.htm). As can be seen, swearing has many reasons, but the first one is probably the most common. Using a swear word to emphasize something is often necessary as it shows how people really feel about things Secondly, swearing can be also quite beneficial. It can be a a useful substitute to physical violence as swearing often frees people from anger or frustation.Swear words can also be used in a more positive manner, in the form of jokes and humor, storytelling, self-deprecation or even social commentary. If one may want to emphasize how great one feels something is, a swear words emphasizes the positive feelings you have for that object, situation, person or event ("This concert is fucking awesome!"). Myers, Kitsuse 2000 Constracting the Future in Planning

Planning’s broad relevance and its interdisciplinary inclusiveness have served as both a strength and a vulnerability. One emphasis that has been identified as central to the intellectual and professional identity or mission of planning is “foresight” (Markusen 1998), “a focus on the future and pathways of change over time” (Strategic Marketing Committee of ACSP 1997), or “persuasive storytelling about the future” A Surprising Neglect (hüljatud). “....planning has lost sight of the future....Planning voluntarily is sacrificing its role as visionary and idealist and is abandoning its responsibility to be a source of inspiration and ideas about what might be and what ought to be”. In planning practice, the recent surge of interest in visioning exercises has raised awareness of planners’ role in shaping the future, in some cases 3 bringing the future to the forefront of high-

The Canterbury tales by Geoffrey Chaucer

Essay based on ,,The General Prologue" by G. Chaucer Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury tales at the end of the 14th century. It is a collection of stories where a group of pilgrims have a storytelling contest. All of them are on their way from Southwark to visit the shrine of a holy martyr who had brought health to them when they were ill. Chaucer joined the twenty nine of them in a tavern and started to talk to them. They quickly became friends and then there were thirty. All of the stories and very different characters create a body to the story, which depicts the picture of the English society at that time. Chaucer depicts the knight as a typical hero

All Marketers are liars

" The book is telling a story about why marketers must forsake any attempt to communicate nothing but the facts, and must focus on what people believe and then work to tell them stories that add their worldview. HIGHLIGHTS Before marketing, before shopping carts and long before informercials, people started telling themselves stories. Stories make it easier to understand the world. Stories are the only way to spread an idea. Marketers didn´t invent storytelling. They just perfected it. We tell ourselves stories, because we´re superstitious. Stories are shortcuts we use because we ´re too overwhelmed by data to discover all the details. We tell stories about products, services, friends, job seekers and sometimes even the weather. We tell ourselves stories that can´t possibly be true, but believing those allows us to function. Marketers are a special kind of liars. Marketers lie to consumers because consumers demand it

Stout and brawny, the Miller has a wart on his nose and a big mouth, both literally and figuratively. He threatens the Host's notion of propriety when he drunkenly insists on telling the second tale. Indeed, the Miller seems to enjoy overturning all conventions: he ruins the Host's carefully planned storytelling order; he rips doors off hinges; and he tells a tale that is somewhat blasphemous, ridiculing religious clerks, scholarly clerks, carpenters, and women. The Manciple (est: AIDAMEES): Where does he work? What are his duties? How had he become rich? A manciple was in charge of getting provisions for a college or court. But if the narrative changes, then so does the narrator, as Ali discovers this is a price she too will have to pay. In The PowerBook Winterson weaves the narrative of an online storyteller named Ali and her/his (we're left guessing) love affair with a married woman into the stories she writes on the email. Ali will concoct a fantastical tale for anyone who wants one in cyberspace. In this book, Winterson has fully embraced the technology of the Internet as a mode of storytelling, and her style of playing with established literary norms once again comes through. 25.
