material in the world.(slide) Moving on, the durability of concrete can be defined as the ability to remain serviceable for at least the required lifetime of the structure of which it forms apart. However there are many factors which shorten the lifetime of concrete (slide) such as: physical attacks, including frost damage, fire, wind and water waves and chemical attacks including sulfates, sea water, acids, alkali-silica reactions and of course corrosion of embedded steel. That's why the durability of concrete needs to be tested. (slide) Firstly, the concrete contains pores and capillaries which fulfill with water. In laboratories several test have been worked out to measure the permeability but in real life we have a similar situations in marine areas. Next, there are three major types of flow constants for concrete. (slide) Firstly there is permeability which is a rate of flow of fluid into a porous solid of concrete. Then comes
The Industrial Revolution, which took place from the 18th to 19th centuries, was a period during which predominantly agrarian, rural societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban. By mid-century, many people worked for small businesses or on farms, laboring in fields that would yield barely enough food to feed the family. New inventions and technology began to change that, however. Larger factories opened and produced new farm equipment, such as the steel plow and the tractor, which allowed farmers to cultivate bigger fields and produce more food that cost much less. Developments in the iron industry also played a central role in the Industrial Revolution. In the early 18th century, Englishman Abraham Darby (1678-1717) discovered a cheaper, easier method to produce cast iron, using a coke-fueled (as opposed to charcoal-fired) furnace. In the 1850s, British engineer Henry Bessemer (1813-1898) developed the first inexpensive process

Described in the Collins Encyclopaedia of Scotland as "the one immediately and internationally recognised Scottish landmark", it may be nominated by the British government to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Scotland. The bridge and its associated railway infrastructure is owned by Network Rail Infrastructure Limited. Until 1917, when the Quebec Bridge was completed, it was the longest cantilever bridge in the world. The Forth Bridge remains the second longest. First steel structure The bridge was built in steel alone, the first bridge in Britain to use that material. It was the first major structure in Britain to be constructed of steel; Its contemporary, the Eiffel Tower was built of wrought iron. Construction The bridge is, even today, regarded as an engineering marvel. It is 2.5 km (1.5 miles) in length, and the double track is elevated 46 m (approx. 150 ft) above high tide. It consists of two main spans of 521.3 m (1,710 ft), two side spans of 207

Hydropneumatic is a type of automotive suspension system, invented by Citroën, and fitted to Citroën cars, as well as being adapted by other car manufacturers, notably Rolls-Royce, Mercedes- Benz and Peugeot. It was also used on Berliet trucks. Similar systems are also used on some military vehicles. The purpose of this system is to provide a soft, comfortable, yet well-controlled ride quality. Its nitrogen springing medium is approximately six times more flexible than conventional steel, so self-leveling is incorporated to allow the vehicle to cope with the extraordinary suppleness provided. France was noted for poor road quality in the post-war years, so the only way to maintain relatively high speed in a vehicle was if it could easily absorb road irregularities. While the system has inherent advantages over steel springs, generally recognized in the auto industry, it also has an element of complexity, so automakers like Mercedes-Benz, British Leyland
stress tables, standardized structural sections, metallurgical analysis, precision manufacturing and fabrication in bridge shops, publication of industry-wide standards, plans, and specifications, inspections, and systematic cooperation between engineers, contractors, manufacturers, and workers. The combined experience of the railroads, bridge manufacturing companies, and the engineering communities enabled the railroads successfully to tackle long-span iron and steel bridges and long-span trussed-roof train sheds, two engineering icons of the 19th century. Figure 12 Whipple Truss Bridge (1867), Normanskill Farm, Albany, New York (USA), remains in service to this day, restricting only buses and trucks, thus testifying to the efficacy of Whipple's design. In addition, there are dead loads, which are permanently there and support their own weight these are the heavy elements like columns, beams, floors, arches, domes, but also ceiling and inslulation material. Finally, it leaves us with other loads corrosion, fire and loads during construction. First of all, thermal loads are sometimes called hidden or locked-in loads and caused by daily or seasonal change in air temperature. To clarify its effect, let´s assume that a steel bridge 100 m long was erected in winter at an average temperature of 2oC. On a summer day, when the air temperature reaches 32oC, the bridge lengthens, since all bodies expand when heated. The increase in length of the bridge can be computed to be only 3 cm. It is indeed small, one three thousandths of the bridge´s length, however, if the bridge is anchored to abutments that do not allow this thermal expansion, the abutments will push on the bridge to reduce its length by 3 cm.

Adenauer and Winston Churchill. On 9th May in 1950 French Minister of Foreign Affairs proposed that France and the Federal Republic of Germany should combine their coal and steel resources and let other European countries join also. From that on, the 9th of May has been considered as the birth of European Union and is now celebrated as Europe Day. In 1951 the founding members (Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and Netherlands sign a treaty of European Coal and Steel Community for a period of 50 years. In 1955 the six countries decide to extend European economy and in 1957 the treaty of Rome is signed (which establishes the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community). In 1960 from the pressure of the UK the Stockholm Convention establishes European Free Trade Association. In 1963 an agreement is signed creating an association between the European Economic Community and Turkey. In 1965 in
Süsinikterased on kõige laiemalt kasutatavad sulamid üldse, kuid vastavalt otstarbele on terase koostis erinev. Kristallstruktuuri järgi võib süsiniku ja raua sulam olla: tsementiit, austeniit, martensiit või perliit. Ühes tükis terases on tavaliselt esindatud kõik kolm. Süsinikusisaldus teeb raua kõvemaks ja suurendab tunduvalt tõmbetugevust, kuid teras on rauast rabedam. Terasesse lisatakse ka teisi keemilisi elemente nagu : · Kroom · Lämmastik · Mangaan · Molübdeen · Nikkel · Nioobium · Tantaal · Titaan · Vanaadium · Vask · Volfram Terase ajalugu ...

History of Gillette Razors On November 15, 1904, patent was granted to King C. Gillette for a safety 'razor'. In 1895, after several years of considering and rejecting possible inventions, Gillette suddenly had a brilliant idea while shaving one morning. It was an entirely new razor and blade that flashed in his mind --a razor with a safe, inexpensive, and disposable blade. It took six years for Gillette's idea to evolve. During that time, technical experts told Gillette that it would be impossible to produce steel that was hard, thin, and inexpensive enough for commercial development of the disposable razor blade. Then in 1901, MIT graduate William Nickerson agreed to try. By 1903, he had succeeded.

The obvious difference in rigging is the third wire or central warp (b), which runs from the vessel to the clump (c), a heavy weight which can consist of short lengths of chain cable shackled together or a custom made device (Fig. 12) designed to roll rather than be dragged along the bottom. Warp length/water depth ratios are similar to those used with the single demersal trawl and bridles/sweeps (d) can be steel wire, combination wire, chain or a mixture of all three. Normal towing speed used is around 2.5 knots. 13 Beam trawls are used to harvest whitefish, mainly flatfish such as sole, plaice or megrim together with angler and other species found hard down on the seabed. Each net is fished from an outrigger boom, one on each side of the vessel (Figure 14), and towed from here on a single warp (a) shackled to a

Roofs are part of external envelope and the main purpose is to protect buildings against precipitations and sounds. My house have a pitched roof what is covered with corrugated iron. Roof struss consists of principal rafters, ceiling joists and struts made of timber. Those parts are secured together with steel connector what is pressed into the timber. There are also iron gutters and drainpipes to run water away. The main purpose of stairs is to provide floor-to-floor access. Our stairs are made of timber and there are no handrail, because it is between two walls and there are only six steps. The nosings are 3 cm high and there are also risers behind every step, made of timber also. All the steps are varnished. We can also find secondary elements in every house
