The differences lie in the language use, character types, speakers, layout etc. In the original "Beowulf" epic Grendel displays nothing but the most primitive human qualities. He is a grotesque monster who terrorizes a small community of Danish warriors. Therefore he can be called a flat character. In the book "Grendel" the protagonist and antagonist have been swapped. Gardner greatly alters the monster's characterization. The problem is that no one know excaktly how. Why did they look for a philosopher's stone? Because besides the ability to make base metals into noble ones it was said to have another even greater power. It could potentionally make the holder of philospher's stone immortal. So the stakes were high. Everybody knew that they could rule the world with this mysthical substance. But now everybody believed in it. Mixing together diferent substances probably shorten their life span by decades. They spent their lives to find it but I don't think that they managed it. Why i would like to have a philosopher's stone? Think about a person who can make gold. I could rule the world simply by being able to produce massive amounts of money out of iron or copper. I could be the richest person on earth and do what i want. It's a nice dream but thinking about it more deeply and after a really short research, I do not believe that a thing like Philosopher's stone exists.

There, Kulibin built a "planetary" pocket-clock, which showed not only the current time, but also the month, day of the week, the season and the current moon phase. Kulibin also designed projects for tower clocks, miniature "clock-in-a-ring" types and others. He also worked on new ways to facet glass for use in microscopes, telescopes and other optical instruments. During the 1770s, he designed a wooden one-arch bridge over the Neva river with a span of 298 metres (instead of the typically used 50-60 metre spans), offering to use an original girder with a cross grate. In 1776 a model 1/10th the natural size of this bridge was tested by a special commission of academics. Kulibin's project was praised by Leonhard Euler and Daniel Bernoulli, but was never realized.
