In Oranges are Not the Only Fruit Melanie was the first lover of the main character Jeanette. They were both religious and wanted to be missionaries. Jeanette described Melanie with words like sweet, lovely, beautiful, good and serene. Melanie had lovely grey eyes. Jeanette met Melanie at a fish stand. At first Melanie was reluctant to start a conversation with Jeanette, but eventually she caved in. Week after week Melanie worked at a fish stand boning kippers on a big marble slab and Jeanette went to watch her. Then, one week Jeanette didn't find her because Melanie had got a job in the library. She had to work there every Saturday morning. Melanie lived with her mother who often wasn't home. She had no father. Jeanette also learned that Melanie had such a funny name because when she was born she had looked like a melon. In my opinion, this indicates that Melanie was not that smart and had limited intellectual capacity.

The pillories were still in use in the 19th century. 72 peasants who had taken part in the disturbances of Kose-Uuemõisa in 1806, were birched in the small pillory (a number of them were later sent to Siberia). At the end of the 17th century a priest, being drunk in a pub, had killed the maid in anger. After that he went to the Town Hall and confessed to the crime. Usually murderers were hanged on the Gallows Hill, but he was sentenced to honourable death by the hangman's sword, as he " had been affected ", when he committed the crime. LPR created an 18-step erection plan for the 2,740 tons of steel. The plan, which included shoring, rigging design and crane reach drawings, was detailed in 3D, including step-by-step sequencing. Once the preliminary shoring locations were confirmed and the sequence of erection was determined, structural load cases were developed (using the shared SAP2000 model) for multiple phases of construction. Load cases included loads from wet concrete slab pours, cured concrete slabs, partially erected portions of the structure as well as various stages of shore removal based on the erection plan. These structural models ultimately determined design loads for the shores. The specifications for the project required that the erector prove the structure was not overstressed during any phase of construction. It became apparent that positioning of the shores was critical to assure that overstress conditions would not occur (Figure 22).

It had been hauled down from the mountains years before and had never been used. Michelangelo had walked past this street many times, but this time he stopped and looked more closely. T h e hike that was supposed to take an hour had taken three hours and there was no end in sight. I lost my footing a couple of times in the muck and barely caught myself, clinging to the crumbling rock with fingers cramped and arms shaking, knowing I would fall for hundreds of feet before I hit something solid and level. A n d then, as my adventure led me around the cooler, shadow side of the mountain, I reached a vast, wet scar where a whole slab of the mountain had fallen away into a deep canyon, leaving a slanted field of jagged boulders the size of houses that would be challenging to cross. I didn't know whether to turn back or keep go ing. I began to measure my strength very precisely, recognizing a primal, instinctive hyper-awareness that comes when one is at the edge of death. For as I watched the sun sink into the tree-line, I felt my life energy draining, and realized I was in one
