Raphael Sanzio Raphael (April 6 or March 28, 1483 April 6, 1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. Raphael was enormously productive, running an unusually large workshop. Most of his work remains especially in the Vatican. He received his first training from his father, Giovanni Santi, who was a poet and a painter. After that he became a student and assistant of the painter Perugino. Raphael imitated his master closely and sometimes it is difficult to distinguish which works are painted by Raphael.
