Sherlock Holmes

aastal. Alates 2002. aastast on Sherlock Holmes Royal Society of Chemistry auliige[1]. Oma tegelaskuju loomisel olid kirjanikul eeskujuks detektiivid C. Auguste Dupin Edgar Allan Poe ja Monsieur Lecoq Émile Gaboriau' kriminaaljuttudes. Kohtudes doktor Watsoniga 1881. aastal, üüritakse kahe peale poissmeestekorter Baker Street 221B. Kuulsa detektiivi teadmiste pagas on lünklik.

Kuid väike osa inimesi on võimelised neile teatavaks tehtud tulemustest lähtudes loogilise mõtlemise abil välja jõudma nende astmeteni, mis sellise tulemuseni viisid" -Sherlock Holmes...

Baskerville koer

Conan Doyle teos Baskerville'ide koer algab Sir Charles Baskerville'ga, kes on oma sajanditevanuses mõisas salapäraselt surnud ning tema pärija Henry, kes on kuulnud legendi suguvõsa läbi sajandite jälitavast koerast, kutsub asja uurima Londoni kuulsaima detektiivi Sherlock Holmesi . Kuna tegu on huvitava juhtumiga, alustab Sherlock Holmes uurimist.

Charlie Chaplini elulugu

Both his parents were music hall entertainers and Charlie started appearing on the stage while still a child. His father, Charles Chaplin, deserted the family and eventually died of alcoholism. His mother, Hannah Chaplin, found it increasingly difficult to find work on the stage and in 1895 the family entered the Lambeth Workhouse. When he was sixteen Chaplin won the part of Billy in a West End production of Sherlock Holmes . He later joined Fred Karno's music hall revue. While touring the United States in 1913 Chaplin was discovered by the film producer Mack Sennett. Over the next couple of years Chaplin made a series of short slapstick films for Sennett's Keystone Company. In these films Chaplin developed a character that wore baggy pants, tight frock coat, large shoes on the wrong feet and a black derby hat. By his thirteenth film, Caught in the Rain (1914), Cha...

The mysterious affair at styles

11 INTRODUCTION The Mysterious Affair at Styles is a detective novel by Agatha Christie. It was written in 1916 and was first published by John Lane in the USA in October 1920 and in the UK by The Bodley Head (John Lane's UK company) on January 21 1921. In her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles(1920), she created the now-famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, the most popular sleuth in fiction since Sherlock Holmes . Poirot and Marple have also been portrayed in the many films, radio programmes and stage plays based on her books. It is Christie's first published novel, and introduces Hercule Poirot, Inspector Japp and Lieutenant Hastings (later, Captain) The story is told in first person by Hastings, and features many of the elements that, thanks to Christie, have become icons of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. It is set in a large, isolated country manor...

Charlie Chaplin

From "Easy Street" (1917) to "Modern Times" (1936), he made many of the funniest and most popular films of his time. He was best known for his character, the naive and lovable Little Tramp. The Little Tramp, a well meaning man in a raggedy suit with cane, always found himself wobbling into awkward situations and miraculously wobbling away. More than any other figure, it is this kind-hearted character that we associate with the time before the talkies. Born in London in 1889, Chaplin first visited America with a theater company in 1907. Appearing as "Billy" in the play "Sherlock Holmes ", the young Chaplin toured the country twice. On his second tour, he met Mack Sennett and was signed to Keystone Studios to act in films. In 1914 Chaplin made his first one-reeler, "Making a Living". That same year he made thirty-four more short films, including "Caught in a Caba...

Arthur Conan Doyle

Arriving in Portsmouth in June of that year with less than £10 to his name, he set up a medical practice at 1 Bush Villas in Elm Grove, Southsea. The practice was initially not very successful; while waiting for patients, he again began writing stories. His first significant work was A Study in Scarlet, which appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and featured the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes , who was partially modelled after his former university professor, Joseph Bell. Future short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes were published in the English Strand Magazine. Interestingly, Rudyard Kipling congratulated Conan Doyle on his success, asking "Could this be my old friend, Dr. Joe?" Sherlock Holmes, however, was even more closely modelled after the famous Edgar Allan Poe character, C. Auguste Dupin....

London

The Romans lead by Julius Caesar attempted to invade Britain twice before that in 55 and 54 BC but the invasions were unsuccessful. They made their way to the river Thames and sailed up it. The Romans knew it was important to control a crossing point at the river Thames, so they decided to build a settlement on the north bank. Although small settlements had been built on the banks of the Thames, the Romans were the ones who built the first city. They called their city Londinium. The Roman engineers noticed that the point where the swampy river narrowed would make an ideal crossing point, they built London Bridge. Less than 20 years later the native Iceni tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against the Romans in revenge for mistreatment and burnt Londinium to the ground. The well disciplined Roman army defeated her forces and Londinium was r...

Arthur Conan Doyle

Holmesi prototüübina kasutas Doyle üht oma õppejõudu, dr. Joseph Belli. Doyle suri 71-aastaselt 7.juulil 1930.aastal....
