TOPIC 8 The greatest poet of Scotland Robert Burns is loved by all Scotsmen as their greatest poet. The future poet was fortunate in his father who was understanding, friendly and fearless man. So it was probably from him that the poet inherited his great love and undrestanding of people. From his mother he, too, learned something that was to be value to him. His mother often sang the old songs and ballads of the countryside. Although William Burns, Robert´s father, was a poor peasant, he was man who valued knowledge. His greatest wish was to give his children the best education in his power. It was from him where Robert received his love of books. When Robert was six he and his brother Gilbert went to school, but only after a few months the teacher left and the school was closed. Their father persuaded two or three neighburs to join him in engaging another teacher. The new teacher was called John Murdoch. Although he was only eighteen...

In July of 1786, Burns had succeeded in publishing the first book of his poems, the "Kilmarnock Edition", which became enormously popular. 1) INDIAN ROCK ART: A NATIONAL TREASURE IN DANGER Unrecognized, unprotected, this priceless legacy of primitive art has endured the ravages of nature only to fall victim to wanton destruction by ,,civilized" man. Like the huge stone statues of Easter Island and prehistoric cave paintings of Altamira and Lascaux, North American Indian rock art is surrounded by an atmosphere of mystery. Although examples of rock art exist at some 15000 sites in canyons, deserts, caves and river gorges. Nowadays, however, primitive rock art in the United States has become a new field of scientific study. Klaus F Wellmann wrote two books about rock art. He is a professor of medicine. Rock art represents the history of aboriginal Americans. In the most cases the art is an expression of ideas and way of life, ritual ceremonies, hunting, fighting. The pictures of people and animals are often strikingly lifelike and artistic. Many of these ancient relics have ...
My Heart's in the Highlands Loo pealkiri on ’’My heart’s in the highlands’’. Pala muusika autor on 82 aastane Arvo Pärt, kes on kogunud maailmas tuntust juba aastast 1984, mil ilmus ECMi egiidi all Pärdi autoriplaat „Tabula rasa”. Teose sõnade autor on šotimaa rahvuspoeet Robert Burns, kes on kõige tuntum šoti keeles luuletaja, ehkki suurem osa ta teoseid on inglise keeles. Vokalist on Taani lauljatar Else Torp, kes laulab häälekõrgusel sopran. Loo organist on 72-aastane inglise helilooja ja organist Christopher Bowers-Broadbent. Lugu ’’Minu süda on mägismaal’’ on filmimuusikaks Paolo Sorrentino Oskari võitnud filmile ’’The Great Beauty’’. Lool on vaikne dünaamika. Oreli saates on kuulda sarnast, rahuli...

14-realine on SONETT. Esimesed eesti sonetid, kuigi saksakeelsed, ilmusid juba 17. sajandil Reiner Brockmanni sulest. Eestikeelse soneti kõrge meisterlikkuse saavutasid sajand hiljem Marie Under, Henrik Visnapuu, Johannes Sem per, Jaan Kärner, Juhan Sütiste, Betti Alver ja Bernard Kangro. See tundub vanamoelisena. Tavaliselt luuakse itaalia sonette (4+4+3+3 värssi), mis pakub nelikute kirjelduse pingelist murdumist kolmikute eneseväljenduseks. Nii nagu novellis, on ka sonetis tähtis üllatav pööre ehk PUÄNT, mille esile tõstmise võimalused on head inglise ehk Shakespeare'i sonetis (4+4+4+2 värssi). Soneti vormiga võib mängida: jätta salme ja värsse ära (4+3+3, 4+3), kirjutada juurde (4+4+3+3+1), panna risti (4+3+4+3, 4+4+1+4+1), tõsta sülle (4+3+3+4) vmt. Kirjutada võib ka arhailisi kahesalmilisi sonette (8+6).Kuulus, ent keeruline trikk on vähemasti 15 sonetist koosnev SONETI- PÄRG , kus iga luuletuse lõppvärss on järgmise algusvärsiks,...
XVIII sajandi kirjandus: LUULE SATIIRILINE LUULE 18. sajandi algupoolel levis eeskätt satiiriline1 luule. Sageli loobuti kerguse saavutamiseks klassikalistest luulevormidest. Rokokoo hilise suuna esindajaks võib pidada root...

Kirjanduse KT Euroopa valgustusajastu Euroopa valgustusajastu-18.saj. VOLTARIE filosoofiline jutustus- Candide ehk Optimism. Mille poolest erineb ROSSEAU teistest-ta heidab väljakutse kehtivale moraalile ja kaitseb inimese loomulikke õigusi. Ingli...

Scotlan History The history of Scotland begins around 10,000 years ago, when humans first began to inhabit Scotland after the end of the Devensian glaciation, the last ice age. Of the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age civilization that existed in the country, many artifacts remain, but few written records were left behind.People lived in Scotland for at least 8,500 years before recorded history dealt with Britain. The written history of Scotland largely begins with the arrival of the Roman Empire in Britain, when the Romans occupied what is now England and Wales, administering it as a Roman province called Britannia. To the north was territory not governed by the Romans -- Caledonia, by name. Its people were the Picts. From a classical historical viewpoint Scotland seemed a peripheral country, slow to gain advances filtering out from the Mediterranean fount of civilisation, but as knowledge of the past incr...

Plot introduction Jane Eyre is a first-person narrative of the title character. The novel goes through five distinct stages: Jane's childhood at Gateshead, where she is emotionally abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she acquires friends and role models but also suffers privations; her time as the governess of Thornfield Manor, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family at Marsh's End (or Moor House) and Morton, where her cold clergyman-cousin St John Rivers proposes to her; and her reunion with and marriage to her beloved Rochester. Partly autobiographical, the novel abounds with social criticism. It is a novel considered ahead of its time. In spite of the dark, brooding elements, it has a strong sense of right and wrong, of morality at its core. There are several Christian aspects underlying the plot that mold its character and essence. Jane E...

18. sajandil muutis valgustus oluliselt valitseja...

BOOK REPORT Title of the book: Fight Club Author (name and some general information): Chuck Palahniuk is an American novelist born February 21, 1962 in Washington, USA. He is best known as the author for the novel Fight Club (1996), which was made into a movie in 1999. Palahniuk began writing fiction in his mid-thirties. When he attempted to publish his novel, Invisible Monsters, publishers rejected it for its disturbing content. This led him to work on Fight Club which he wrote as an attempt to disturb the publisher even more for rejecting him. After initially publishing it as a short story in the 1995 compilation, Pursuit of Happiness, Palahniuk expanded it into a full novel, which --contrary to his expectations--the publisher was willing to publish. Some other well-known novels: Rant, Choke, Diary. Analysis of the book 1. Setting The story takes place in somewhere between 1980s...

Maailmakirjandus IV 06.02.12 19. sajand on sajandi lõpul juba kirjanduslik-teoreetiline. 19. sajandiks on saanud valgustuslikul ajal (18. saj) loodud uus ilmakord jalad alla. Selle jooksul kaovad varasemad tunnused, üks põhitunnuseid on see, et põllumaj maailma asemel on tekkinud 19. saj alguseks industriaalne ühiskond. Tunneme inimsuhetes ära sellised algelise kuju, mida me tunnem...
1. Ancient Britain: the Celtic tribes. 2000 years ago there was an Iron Age Celtic culture throughout the Br Isles. It seems that the Celts, who had been arriving from Europe from the 8th cent BC onward, intermingled with the peoples who were already there. The Celts were extremely talented people, creative and artistic. More than 1 Celtic tribe invaded Br. The descendants of ancient Celts live in Wales, Scotland, Cornwall and Ireland. They lived in primitive society. Druids priests, more powerful than chiefs. Acted like prophets. 2. Stonehenge From prehistoric period. Was built on Salisbury plain between 2500 and 1500 bc. One of the most famous and mysterious archaeological sites in the world. One of the mysteries is how it was built at all with the technology of the time. Another is its purpose. Foreword Bridging rivers, gorges, narrows, straits, and valleys always has played an important role in the history of human settlement. Since ancient times, bridges have been the most visible testimony of the noble craft of engineers. A bridge can be defined in many ways, but Andrea Palladio, the great 16th century Italian architect and engineer, hit on the essence of bridge building when he said "...bridges should befit the spirit of the community by exhibiting commodiousness, firmness, and delight." In more practical terms, he went on to explain that the way to avoid having the bridge carried away by the violence of water was to make the bridge without fixing any posts in the water. Since the beginning of time, the goal of bridge builders has been to create as wide a span as possible which is commodious, firm, and occasionally delightful. Spanning greater distances is a distinct measure ...

DEPRESSIOON 1. Sissejuhatus Depressioon on piinav.
Absurditeoste tegelased on kaotanud isiksusele omased jooned. Nende tegevusel puudub eesmärk ja elul väljavaade, nad on vaid olendid, kes elavad antud hetkes kellegi armust. Absurdikirjanikena on saanud tuntuks näiteks iirlane Samuel Beckett (1906) ja rumeenlane Eugéne Ionesco (1912), eesti kirjanikest on absurdi Mati Undi (1944) loomingus. Achilleus kuningas Peleuse ja merenümf Thetise poeg. Achilleuse ema kastis ...
