English portfolio

The split between social classes in Estonia was further deepened by the virtual coincidence of the borders between social class and nationality. The most important category in determining one`s social allegiance was the differentiation Deutsch and Undeutsch. Nor did rural Estonians think of themselves as a nation: they rather considered themselves peasants whose identity was largely influenced by regional loyalty. The name they often used while referring to themselves -- "country people" -- also seemed to be a sign of social self- determination. Climbing the social ladder in a society with a fixed class system was possible only for the very few. For an Estonian, this automatically meant Germanisation. Such a process of individuals revising their ethnic adherence, which had begun in the Middle Ages and continued until the early 20th century. S...

Famous castles of Scotland

Forbes purchased the partially completed structure from the impoverished Mortimer family in the year 1610. William Forbes nickname was Danzig Willy, a reference to his shrewd international trading success. The Forbes family resided here for 350 years until 1963, when the property was gifted to the National Trust for Scotland.Designed in the L plan, as was Muchalls Castle, which is located in the same region , Craigievar is noted for its exceptionally crafted plasterwork ceilings. Craigevar, Muchalls Castle and Glamis Castle are generally considered to have the three finest ceilings in Scotland. The Clan Forbes family were close friends of the Clan Burnett of Leys, who built both Crathes Castle and Muchalls Castle. The castle originally had more defensive elements including a walled courtyard with four round towers; only one of the round towers r...

Travelling in the world

Travelling has many positive sides. When people have traveled to a completely different country, then they can compare the life in their own country and the country they are visiting. It makes people see how they can enjoy their life more. Visiting other places also is very good for practicing other languages and communicating with people. Some people only travel to learn history of other regions . Some countries have invested a lot of money to tourism. They try to make their country more attractive to tourists by building hotels. airports and tourist attractions. Doing this gets a lot of money to the travelling destination country. When a country wants to keep the tourists visiting their country they have to invest a lot of money and keep their country safe and attractive. On the other hand there are several bad sides on travelling...

Education

Some of it cannot be used responsibly, which is to say safely and to consistently good purposes. Fourth, we cannot say that we know something until we understand the effects of this knowledge on real people and their communities. I grew up near Youngstown, Ohio, which was largely destroyed by corporate decisions to "disinvest" in the economy of the region . In this case MBAs, educated in the tools of leveraged buyouts, tax breaks, and capital mobility have done what no invading army could do: they destroyed an American city with total impunity on behalf of something called the "bottom line." But the bottom line for society includes other costs, those of unemployment, crime, higher divorce rates, alcoholism, child abuse, lost savings, and wrecked lives. In this instance what was taught in the bu...

Indigenous cookery traditional South African cuisine In the precolonial period, indigenous cuisine was characterized by the use of a very wide range of fruits, nuts, bulbs, leaves and other products gathered from wild plants and by the hunting of wild game. The domestication of cattle in the region about two thousand years ago by Khoisan groups enabled the use of milk products and the availability of fresh meat. However, during the colonial period the seizure of communal land in South Africa restricted and discouraged traditional agriculture and wild harvesting, and reduced the extent of land available to black people. Decline of indigenous cookery Urbanization from the nineteenth century, coupled with close control over agricultural produ...

About England

Highlands turn into lowlands; forests and hills turn into meadows and plains very quickly. It's hard to believe, but in Great Britain one you can find practically any type of scenery. Britain is unusually beautiful country! England can be divided for four parts: the Southeast, the Southwest, East Anglia, the Midlands and the North of England. The Southeast is a highly populated region of England. London, the capital of the UK, and such historical cities as Windsor, Dover and Brighton are situated here. When people travel to Britain by sea or by air they usually arrive in the Southeast, for this is where the main passenger ports and airports are. Heathrow airport, one of the world's busiest airports is about 33 km west of central London. The Southwest is the region where the main activity is farming. The Sou...

Inglismaa

Industrialization took place earlier and more rapidly than anywhere else because the existing conditions were favorable in England. In Britain there is a good system of internal waterways and canals, there are no physical barriers to trade and that made the transport of goods less difficult than in other nations. The south-eastern part of England is the most densely populated region. It is the main centre of printing, clothes and food industry. In that region lie the two biggest airports - Heathrow and Gatwick. The largest town is London, which is an important financial and cultural centre. East Anglia is extremely flat and is dominated by agriculture. They grow mainly fruit, vegetables and soft berries. East Anglia is famous for its large wheat fields. They grow wheat, potatoes and other sorts of vegetables there. Th...
