During the Middle Ages many people who lived in the countryside worked on the land that they got from the noblemen. In return, they were protected by them Between the middle and the end of the 14th century, the plague, also called "Black Death" killed almost half of Europe's population

(Friedlaender, 1952, p.5) By the second half of the century political changes allowed art to be freer and therefore classicism started to bear a rather political note. Political art, various pamphlets, literature and the Enlightenment laid the foundations of the soon coming French Revolution. (Friedlander, 1952, p.7) Analysis To begin with, the 18th century was all about the rebirth of classicism and antiquity. Surprisingly, it was very hard for David to find examples from Antique, because they almost did not exist. Only some paintings that were meant for decor in Pompeii were preserved. dangers, temptations, and tests ahead. 11. RESURRECTION In ancient times, hunters and warriors had to be purified before they returned to their communities, because they had blood on their hands. T h e hero who has been to the realm of the dead must be reborn and cleansed in one last Ordeal of death and Resurrection before returning to the Ordinary W o r l d of the living. T h i s is often a second life-and-death moment, almost a replay of the death and rebirth of the Ordeal. Death and darkness get in one last, desperate shot before being finally defeated. It's a kind of final exam for the hero, who must be tested once more to see if he has really learned the lessons of the Ordeal. T h e hero is transformed by these moments of death-and-rebirth, and is able to return to ordinary life reborn as a new being with new insights. T h e Star Wars films play with this element constantly. T h e films of the

ordinary, uneducated people but was no longer written. By the end of the fourteenth century, however, English was once again a written language, because it was used instead of French by the ruling classes. During the Hundred Years’ War Edward III (1327–1377) actually forbade the speaking of French in his army. It was a way of making the whole army aware of its Englishness, which was important during the war. Two writers, above all others, helped in the rebirth of English literature: William Langland (1330–1400), a priest and poet, whose poem ‘Piers the Ploughman’ [«Петр Пахарь»] gives a powerful description of his time, and Geoffrey Chaucer (1340– 1400), a poet who has become much more famous: ‘The Canterbury Tales’ [«Кентерберийские рассказы»], etc. Middle English is Different But Middle English, the language of the fourteenth and the fifteenth centuries,
