Philip Larkin’s Poetry: Themes, Form, Style, Imagery and Symbolism Author: Sandra Olivares González Tutor: Jesús Marín Calvarro Degree in English Studies, English Department, Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, University of Extremadura Cáceres, 29th January 2016 Philip Larkin’s Poetry: Themes, Form, Style, Imagery and Symbolism The aim of this work is to obtain some characteristics of the poetry of Philip Larkin, such us the origin of his themes, the way in which he writes his poems and the symbolism he uses (which is a very controversial topic because some assume that he does use it, while some others say that he uses it in an ironic way). Romantic poetry and prose

Only the wealthy could afford that because it lasted several years. It started from Dover, passed Paris (learned dancing, riding), Florence, Pisa (studying Renaissance), Rome (study Classical ruins), Greece and ended in Dover. It also passed many other places, but these were the most important. Greece was important because ancient Greece gave inspiration and it started the Greek revival. 6. Characteristics of romantic nature poetry and main representatives Characteristics of romantic nature poetry: · Genuine pleasure found in the natural world · Inspiration · Morality · Health (opposed to smoky industrial urban scenes) · Natural and pure: children and animals Some authors: Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelly, Keats, Burns, Southey, Cowper, and Thomson. Philip Larkin poetry analysis

Philip Larkin poetry analysis For my poetry analysis paper I chose Philip Larkin's works, because he was the first British poet whose works I read. I think that his poems are interesting. They reveal much about Larkin's life and about the social issues in the 20th century. Larkin is also considered to be one of the greatest English poets in the 20th century. I think that Larkin was quite interested in politics. For example his poem ´´Talking in Bed´´

Idealization of nature in Romantic poetry

and connecting it with almost everything. As the second half of the 18 th century was the time of the industrial revolution, urbanization and mankind's distancing from nature in every way, it is not surprising that as a result it became more and more important to and valued by people it had suddenly become something remote and far from everyday life, somewhat a luxury. The utmost way this luxury manifests in romantic poetry is nature's ability to help whoever takes the time to value its divinity get in touch with themselves and get away from everything that might influence their way of acting. Nature provides the ideal atmosphere and surroundings to do this in the opinion of romantic poets, it is the very best place to come to when in need of solitude or an answer to personal or social conflicts. It is far from civilization, everything is pure, primitive, simple, untouched by man. This can be seen in

Robert Burns

Robert Burns was born in a small cottage in Alloway on 25 January 1759. By the time of his death, aged 37, on 21 July 1796, he had become Scotland's bestloved poet and, perhaps more importantly, the symbol of the regeneration of a nation. At Mount Oliphant, when he was 15, Robert wrote his first song, Handsome Nell, for his partner in the fields at harvest time, Nellie Kirkpatrick. Robert had to work as a flax dresser in Irvine to earn money for family but his real passion was poetry. At the age of 27 he had 3 children, two of them were twins. In July of 1786, Burns had succeeded in publishing the first book of his poems, the "Kilmarnock Edition", which became enormously popular. He decided to move to Edinburgh where new editions of his poetry were published. He made a number of tours of Scotland and began collecting traditional Scots songs and tunes for "The Scots Musical Museum". The gathered many old scotish tunes and songs that could have been lost otherwise

Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson, regarded as one of America's greatest poets, is also well known for her unusual life of self imposed social seclusion. Living a life of simplicity and seclusion, she yet wrote poetry of great power; questioning the nature of immortality and death, with at times an almost mantric quality. Her different lifestyle created an aura; often romanticised, and frequently a source of interest and speculation. But ultimately Emily Dickinson is remembered for her unique poetry. Within short, compact phrases she expressed far- reaching ideas; amidst paradox and uncertainty her poetry has an undeniable capacity to move and provoke. Liis

Report (näide)

From: Mari Maasikas Subject: Students’ reading interests Introduction The purpose of this report is to give an overview of Aru School students’ reading interests and recommendations for new books. The report is based on a survey that was carried out by Mari Maasikas at Aru Secondary School earlier this year. Girls Approximately one third of the female students are interested in romantic novels. Thrillers account for slightly below a quarter of the pie chart. Poetry makes up 17 percent of total and historical novels roughly 30%. Boys Slightly over than 50% of the male students prefer to read books from the thriller genre. The romantic novels account for one tenth of the chart. About 30% of the boys are interested in historical novels. Poetry makes up 9 percent of the results. Recommendations Seeing how Aru Secondary School students read books from only four different genres, I would like to give a few recommendations as to what kind of books to buy

The Origins of American Literature

colonisation to Englishmen back in the homeland. An example of this form of writing is John Smith's A True Relation of Virginia, which is widely recognized to be the first example of Am lit. The early years of colonisation produced a mass of utilitarian writings including biographies, accounts of voyages, diaries, sermons, pamphlets. Much of the material addressed the problems of Church and State. There were few examples of fiction, poetry or drama. Anne Bradstreet of Massachusetts published some lyrical poems of high literary quality (1650) and Edward Taylor, who was born in England but lived in Boston, wrote some poetry in the style of John Donne and the metaphysical poets. All 17 th cent Am writings were, both in content and form, similar to English lit of the same period. The great literary figures of the 18th cent were Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), Thomas Paine (1737-1809) and Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826).

How were they depicted in literature? (workhouses, slums, child labour, disease, etc) 5. What ideas and reforms were behind the 'woman question'? Describe the three types of the Victorian women, their roles and development throughout time? 6. Self-help books and the ideology behind them? 7. What is literary realism (definition, development)? Who were the writers whose style is best characterised by this term? 8. Victorian poetry: the dilemmas between aesthetics and morality. Tennyson and Browning, the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood: main subjects and ways of writing poetry 9. The Development and role of the novel. Social novels: themes, ideas. 10. Charles Dickens: general characteristics of his life. Note that these are just general questions for revision, in the test you might get a more detailed question. There is a fair possibility of a poetry analysis type of a question.

The Life of Dante, the Inferno of Dante

The Life of Dante, the Inferno of Dante Dante Alighieri, one of the greatest poets of the Middle Ages, was born in Florence, Italy on June 5, 1265. He was born to a middle-class Florentine family. At an early age he began to write poetry and became fascinated with lyrics. During his adolescence, Dante fell in love with a beautiful girl named Beatrice Portinari. He saw her only twice but she provided much inspiration for his literary masterpieces. Her death at a young age left him grief-stricken. His first book, La Vita Nuova, was written about her. Sometime before 1294, Dante married Gemma Donati. They had four children. Dante was active in the political and military life of Florence.

even though he never had much money. Unfortunately, Robert Burns was not a successful farmer. The family had to live very poorly indeed. In Edinburgh he came into contact with the literary circles of the Scottish capital. He also toured Scotland and Northern England collecting ballads and folktales. When he was offered money for this work, he refused to take any though he was always short of money. His work was inspired by pure patriotism and love for his people and their poetry. For the last six years of his life he served as a tax collector. Burns died when he was only 37 years old. His early death was due to the fact all his life he had lived in poverty. In his lifetime Burns published several volumes of poetry. He wrote all kind of poems beautiful and tender songs in which he showed sympathy for the poor and angry verses which he expressed his dislike for the rich and made fun of the church. His poems were composed while he was walking along behind the plough

negligible largely because external wars and internal strife ravaged the country for almost a century and a half (1337-1485) The Renaissance in England may be divided into 3 parts: the rise of the R. under early Tudor monarchs, the height of R. under Elizabeth I, the decline of the R. under the Stuart monarchs. 6. The first manifestations of the Renaissance in English literature. The first major impact of the Renaissance on English literature is observable in the poetry of Wyatt and Surrey, who introduced and Anglicized the sonnet, a verse form that has proved to be both popular and durable. Surrey is credited also with inventing English blank verse. Other verse forms, borrowed from the Italian and French, had a lesser impact. Elaborate Renaissance conventions of love poetry were also transplanted, finding their outlet chiefly in sonnets and sonnet sequences. 7. Which events diminished the power of the Catholic Church in England?

Letter of enquiry

4 November 2011 Dear Sir or Madam I am writing in reply to your advertisement in a magazine. I would be interested in publishing my work. I would be grateful if you could answer some questions, as the advertisement was rather brief. First of all, I would like to know if you have set an age limit or a deadline. I also wonder whether the poetry is acceptable and where the work will be published. Finally, could you inform me if I may send in my manuscript by e-mail. I look forward to receiving your reply. Yours faithfully, Tiiu Tamm

Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas He was one of the most popular poets in the 20th century. Thomas grew up in Wales and left school at the age of 16. During his teen years he wrote numerous poems and had his first poem published in 1933. During his career Thomas also wrote short stories, essays, film scripts and one novel. His poems seem to be disorderly, overwhelming outpourings of language. In 1949 he began visiting the US for poetry reading tours, he became a celebrity there. His most famous play "Under Milk Wood". His favourite themes were London in wartime, nature, Wales's culture and identity. Most well known works: "Eighteen poems", "Do not go gentle into that good night", "Twenty-five Poems".

American Literature

James Fenimore Cooper, with their emphasis on heroic simplicity and their fervent landscape descriptions of an alreadyexotic mythicized frontier peopled by "noble savages", similar to the philosophical theory of Rousseau, exemplified by Uncas, from The Last of the Mohicans. There are picturesque "local color" elements in Washington Irving's essays and especially his travel books. Edgar Allan Poe's tales of the macabre and his balladic poetry were more influential in France than at home, but the romantic American novel developed fully with the atmosphere and melodrama of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1850). Later Transcendentalist writers such as Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson still show elements of its influence and imagination, as does the romantic realism of Walt Whitman. The poetry of Emily Dickinson--nearly unread in her

Economy **** Culture For an island of relatively small population, Ireland has made a disproportionately large contribution to world literature in all its branches, mainly in English. Poetry in Irish represents the oldest vernacular poetry in Europe with the earliest examples dating from the 6th century; Jonathan Swift, still often called the foremost satirist in the English language, was wildly popular in his day and remains so in modern times amongst both children and adults. The Irish tradition of folk music and dance is also widely known. In the middle years of the 20th century, as Irish society was attempting to modernise,

Peaesindajaid: antiikajal – Lucretius (1. saj. e. m. a.), teos „Asjade loomusest“ (De rerum natura); 19. – 20. sajandil: hispaania-ameerika filosoof George Santayana (1863 – 1952), teoseid: „Ilu taju“ (1896, The Sense of Beauty), „Tõlgendusi luulest ja religioonist“ (1900, Interpretations of Poetry and Religion). Erinevalt sellele eelnenud kriitilisest realismist (näiteks Balzaci looming), mis teostes rõhutas inimese sotsiaalset olemust, asetasid naturalistid rõhu inimesele kui bioloogilisele olendile, kelle elus ja saatuses on enamik asju looduse poolt ette määratud. Sellega kaasnes inimese kehalise toimimise, haiguste ja muu sellise üksikasjalik kirjeldamine. Eesmärk

Futurism

Teine futuristlik manifest Maalikunst pidi loobuma traditsioonilistest motiividest. Kästi kasutada võimalikult teravaid või kriiskavaid värvikombinatsioone. Futuristide taotlused Taotleti korraga paljude rahutute muljete kujutamist. Püüti kujutada liikumisillusiooni, mille saavutamiseks lammutati nähtav maailm kubistide eeskujul geomeetrilisteks kildudeks, millest loodi lõikuvate pindade ja joontega dünaamiline kompositsioon. Kujutati ühel pildil oleva sama objekti mitut järgnevat asendit, kusjuures objekt ise kujutati enam-vähem realistlikult. Futuristid eelistasid eredaid värvikasutusi.
