Education

Relaying my own experience is easy: I had a standard classroom approach, supplemented by inordinate reading. In only the briefest and least memorable instances did I receive any individual tutoring. Education is commonly thought of as the job of schools. Adults cry "educate our children!" Everyone has opinions about the best way to do the job. It is of urgent importance, and all the numerous factors are much studied, debated, and new (or old) ideas continually tested or retested. Some people say "it's as simple as . . . " and then name their pet peeve or passion. My view is not of an education specialist, but of one who loves sharing what I learn, and owes much to educators. Since I don't have an educational theory neatly worked-out, nor an outline of my perceptions, my intent is to addr...

Islam

By 1055 the Seljuq Turks had eliminated the Abbasids as a military power, nevertheless they continued to respect the caliph's titular authority. During this time expansion of the Muslim world continued, by both conquest and peaceful proselytism even as both Islam and Muslim trade networks were extending into sub Saharan West Africa, Central Asia, Volga Bulgaria and the Malay archipelago. The Golden Age saw new legal, philosophical , and religious developments. The major hadith collections were compiled and the four modern Sunni Madh'habs were established. Islamic law was advanced greatly by the efforts of the early 9th century jurist alShafi'i; he codified a method to establish the reliability of hadith, a topic which had been a locus of dispute among Islamic scholars.Philosophers Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and AlFarabi sought to incorporate Greek...

STYLE The term "style" is polysemantic (has many meanings): a Latin word "stilus" originally meant a writing instrument used by ancient people. Already in classical Latin the meaning was extended to denote the manner of expressing one's ideas in written or oral form. Jonathan Swift defined style as "proper words in proper places". In present day English the word "style" is used in about a dozen of principle meanings: 1. the characteristic manner in which a writer expresses his/her ideas (e.g. style of Byron) 2. the manner of expressing ideas, characteristic of a literary movement or period 3. the use of language typical of a literary genre (e.g. the style of a comedy, drama, novel). 4. the selective use of language that depends on spheres / areas of human activity (e.g. style of fiction, scientific prose, newspapers, business correspondence, etc.). STYLISTICS Stylistics is the study of s...

James Watt

He worked in his father's shop and he developed an interest in trying to make things "work like clockwork". In his late teens he went to London to learn to be a "mathematical and philosophical instrument maker", and when he returned to Glasgow he got a job making instruments with Glasgow University, who gave him a place where to live and a workshop. In 1763 John Andreson asked him to repair an early steam engine he had bought. This early model, known as a Newcomen engine, was very unefective. The cylinder (where the piston was) had to be heated when steam was admitted, and then cooled again to condense the steam. This wasted a lot of time and fuel. Two years later, while walking through Glasgow Green, Watt hit upon the idea of condensing the steam in a separate place. This...

Michael Faraday

Raamatute maailmas tulidki esile Faraday vaimsed huvid. 1810.a. algul juhtus Faraday nägema kaupluseaknal kuulutust, et härra Tatumi loenguid loodusteadusest peetakse õhtuti kell 8, sissepääs 1 silling. Neid loenguid tahtis ta kuulda. Oma peremehelt oli ta loa saanud, kuid raha puudus. Vanem vend oli siis juba sepp ja see andis vajamineva summa...

Hamelti tegelased (Ingilse keeles)

When he speaks, he sounds as if there's something important he's not saying, maybe something even he is not aware of. The ability to write soliloquies and dialogues that create this effect is one of Shakespeare's most impressive achievements. A university student whose studies are interrupted by his father's death, Hamlet is extremely philosophical and contemplative. He is particularly drawn to difficult questions or questions that cannot be answered with any certainty. Faced with evidence that his uncle murdered his father, evidence that any other character in a play would believe, Hamlet becomes obsessed with proving his uncle's guilt before trying to act. The standard of "beyond a reasonable doubt" is simply unacceptable to him. He is equally plagued with questions about the...

Renaissance

What kind of ideas and beliefs did the Renaissance develop? Stimulated by the discovery that the men and women of ancient Greece and Rome were intelligent, cultured, and creative, the Renaissance gradually became also the rebirth of the human spirit, a realization of the human potential for development. This realization led eventually to many discoveries geographical, religious, and scientific, as well as artistic and philosophical . Both the Age of Discovery and the Protestant Reformation had their origins in the Renaissance spirit. Renaissance belief: life in this world was not merely a preparation for the next world but that, on the contrary and active life in this world had value in itself. 5. How did the Renaissance in England differ from the Renaissance in Europe? Why? The phenomenon of the Renaissance touched England lightly and fleetingly during the time of Chaucer...

For a sleepless weekend, Barcelona is the place to go. CATALANS The Catalans really know how to have a good time. They love life, love to party and see little point in sleeping when they could be out enjoying the night scene. At the hour when most people in Britain are heading home to bed, the action in Barcelona is just warming up. And when most Scottish clubs are closing their doors, the hippest clubs in this city are just opening theirs. GAUDI Most tourists will want to take in stunning sights such as Gaudi's wackily- designed flats, his unfinished Sagrada Famiglia church and the city's more traditional Santa Eulalia cathedral. Young locals, however, are more likely to be found w...

Soon it became clear, however, that the Society's principal function was to serve as a clearing center for research. The Society maintained correspondence and encouraged foreign scholars [ õpetlane ] to submit their discoveries to the Society. In 1665 the Society launched its Philosophical Transactions, the first professional scientific journal. The English example was followed on the continent as well: in 1666 Louis XIV accepted the founding of the French Royal Academy of Sciences and by 1700, similar organizations were established in Naples and Berlin. The New Science was also diffused [ hajutatud ] by public demonstrations. This was especially the case in public anatomy lessons. Scientist and layman [ võhik ] alike were invited to witness the dissection of human...

Positivism

Positivismi teesid ei väida,et õiguse väärtused on arusaamatud, ebatähtsad või välised õiguse filosoofiale. See väidab, et nad ei tee kindlaks kas seadused või õiguslikud süsteemid eksisteerivad. Kas 1 Philosophy does not produce propositions which are true or false; it merely clarifies the meaning of statements, showing some to be scientific, some to be mathematical and some (including most so-called philosophical statements) to be nonsensical. 4 ühiskonnal on õiguslik süsteem sõltub valitsuse teatud struktuuridest, mitte sellest kas see rahuldab õiguslikke ideaale, demokraatiat või seaduse reeglit. Lihtsamalt öeldes positivism on vaade sellest, et õigus on sotsiaalne konstruktsioon (Green 2003). 5 Kirjanduse loetelu Grauberg, E.ja Kivinurk, K. 1991...
