He joined the army, serving for a time on the Western Front. In 1917, he was back in government as minister of munitions. From 1919 to 1921 he was secretary of state for war and air, and from 1924-1929 was chancellor of the exchequer. The next decade were his 'wilderness years', in which his opposition to Indian self-rule and his support for Edward VIII during the 'Abdication Crisis' made him unpopular, while his warnings about the rise of Nazi Germany and the need for British rearmament were ignored. When war broke out in 1939, Churchill became first lord of the Admiralty. In May 1940, Neville Chamberlain resigned as prime minister and Churchill took his place. His refusal to surrender to Nazi Germany inspired the country. He worked tirelessly throughout the war, building strong relations with US President Roosevelt while maintaining a sometimes difficult alliance with the Soviet Union.

A bust of the Second World War First Sea Lord Admiral Cunningham by Franta Belsky was unveiled in Trafalgar Square on 2 April 1967 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.[5] The square has become a social and political location for visitors and Londoners alike, developing over its history from "an esplanade peopled with figures of national heroes, into the country's foremost place politique", as historian Rodney Mace has written. Its symbolic importance was demonstrated in 1940 when the Nazi SS developed secret plans to transfer Nelson's Column to Berlin following an expected German invasion, as related by Norman Longmate in If Britain Had Fallen (1972). But with changing public opinion, it will only be, according to some people, a matter of time, the time needed for a movement begun many decades earlier to achieve its goals. To tell the truth, the 20th century has undoubtedly been the most violently homophobic period of history: deportation to concentration camps under the Nazi regime, Soviet gulags, blackmail and persecution in the United States in the McCarthy era... Obviously, all of that can seem very distant to us now. But quite often living conditions in the world today remain very unfavorable. Homosexuality is discriminated against everywhere: in at least 80 countries, homosexual acts are forbidden by law (Algeria, Senegal, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Bosnia...); in many countries, the

nomination for Best Story in 1944 for Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat. The Moon Is Down is a novella by John Steinbeck, an American author. The title refers to a nice phrase spoken by Banquo's son Fleance in Shakespeare's Macbeth. It was published in March of 1942. The story details a military occupation of a small town in Northern Europe by the army of an unnamed nation at war with England and Russia. A French language translation of the book was published illegally in Nazi-occupied France by Les Editions de Minuit, a French Resistance publishing house. Furthermore, numerous other editions were also secretly published across all of occupied Europe, including Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Dutch and Italian versions. It has appeared in at least 92 editions across the world Plot summary In the story, an invading force arrives at a coal mining town in Europe and North America and takes it over, only Dougie Smith can save them
of Westminster Abbey. In 2010, the International Astronomical Union approved that a crater on the planet Mercury would be named after Kipling - one of ten newly discovered impact craters observed by the MESSENGER spacecraft in 2008-9. Many older editions of Rudyard Kipling's books have a swastika printed on their covers associated with a picture of an elephant carrying a lotus flower. Since the 1930s this has raised the possibility of Kipling being mistaken for a Nazi-sympathiser, though the Nazi party did not adopt the swastika until 1920. Kipling's use of the swastika was based on the Indian sun symbol conferring good luck and well-being; the word derived from the Sanskrit word svastika meaning "auspicious object". He used the swastika symbol in both right- and left-facing orientations, and it was in general use at the time. Even before the Nazis came to power, Kipling ordered the engraver to remove it from the printing block so that he should not be thought of as supporting them
possible. While some cultures regard any dancing by women as the most shameful form of entertainment, other cultures have established venues such as strip clubs where deliberately erotic or sexually provocative dances are performed in public by professional women dancers for mostly male audiences. In history, various political regimes have sought to control or ban dancing or specific types of dancing. For example, during the Nazi regime, American dances such as swing, regarded as completely un-German, had become a public offense and needed to be banned. But banning had the effect of making the dance craze even greater. Dances can be performed in any possible ways. Some of them, such as traditional dance and ballet, need a very high level of skill and training; others require a very high level of energy and physical fitness. Entertaining the audience is a normal part of dance but its physicality often also

German occupation. After Germany surrendered to the Allies in November 1918, Estonia declared itself an independent democratic republic and repulsed the invading Red Army. In 1920, by the Peace of Tartu, Soviet Russia recognized Estonia's independence. Political parties were abolished in 1934, and President Konstantin Päts instituted an authoritarian regime(reziim). A more democratic constitution came into force in 1938; but the Nazi-Soviet Pact of August 1939, placed the Baltic countries under Soviet control.Complete Soviet military occupation came in June 1940. Following elections in July, Estonia was incorporated into the USSR as a constituent republic. Over 60,000 persons were killed or deported during the occupation's first year. Estonian irregulars fought Soviet troops in June 1941 as part of the German invasion, and their support of the Nazis continued through 1944
1917. At the treaty of Brest-Litovsk the following year, which brought an end to Russian involvement in World War I, Estonia was ceded. The new Soviet government at first refused to recognize Estonian independence but gave way in February 1920. The new state along with its Baltic neighbors, Lithuania and Latvia enjoyed just two decades of independent statehood before the Soviet Union took control under the 1939 Nazi-Soviet Pact. Soviet ownership lasted barely 12 months before Estonia was conquered in the German invasion of the Soviet Union. It was retaken by the Red Army in 1944, after which Estonia was constituted as one of the 15 Soviet Socialist Republics. Four decades passed until Mikhail Gorbachev who, as Communist Party General Secretary, offered the prospect of change for the Baltic States. The government fled to London, and the country suffered under Nazi rule during World War II (1939-1945). 1949 - After four years of fighting, the Netherlands recognized the independence of its former colony of Indonesia. 1954 - Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles became equal members of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. 1957 - The Netherlands became a founding member of the European Economic Community (now the European Union). 1962 - The Netherlands ceded control of its last overseas colony, Netherlands New Guinea, to Indonesia.
If country violates anti-dumping regulations, certain trade-barriers could be imposed to avoid that. International crimses In certain situations conflicts can be submitted to the ICJ if all members of the conflict agree to do so. E.g. with the Antarctica treaty. PIL can punish private persons for international crimes. Before there were ad hoc tribunals. Ad hoc created for a specific purpose; e.g. Nürnberg tribunal, made specifically to punish major Nazi-German criminals. Now there's an international court. Law of international treaties Written positive law in general (because treaties can have different names such as settlement, pact, covenant, declaration, charter (inter-governmental document)etc.). Legally binding only for member states (agreement, contract, pact, truce, settlement ,act etc) It can also be the exchange of diplomatic notes, not just a single document.

Kennedy escaped capture in the Pacific because the Japanese failed to solve a simple cipher. • How codebreaking determined a presidential election, convicted an underworld syndicate head, won the battle of Midway, led to cruel Allied defeats in North Africa, and broke up a vast Nazi spy ring. • How one American became the world's most famous codebreaker, and another became the world's greatest. • How codes and codebreakers operate today within the secret agencies of the U.S. and Russia. • And incredibly much more. These parties are actually postmodern substitude of real communication. Oedipa wants to be above this, wants to escape this lifestyle, thats why she goes on this adventure. The novel almost reads like a computer game, oedipa goes to places, meets people, as in a computer quest game. The novel is also about historical paranoia, there are a lot of allusions to hitler. It might be a warning not to forget. Wagner music, Wagners music was played in the gas chambers in nazi germany. Violence, renessaince revenge drama, in which everybody dies. Allusions to the holocaust. European fudual wars in the middle ages. Pierce Inverarity can be interpretated as a global, who manipulates reality. Oedipas identity changes throughout the novel, at the beginnnign she is Mrs. Mars, at the end she is Mr. Mars. She realizies that there might be another America, both culturally and socially, in this sense
TRENDS. VIII. THE FORTIES. TRANSFORMATION OF ESTONIAN LIFE. THE WAR-TIME SYMPHONIC OUTPUT. 1 Mihkel Lüdig, Mälestused (Memoirs) (Tallinn: Eesti Raamat, 1969) 187. 2 Hans Kruus, Eesti rahva kutsumusest ja rahvusterviklusest (The mission and national integrity of the Estonians) (Tartu: Eesti Üliõpilaste Seltsi Vilistlaskogude Liidu Kirjastus, 1940) 28-29. Just before the outbreak of World War II in a secret protocol of the non- aggression pact1 entered into by Nazi Germany and the USSR, the Baltic states had been placed in the sphere of influence of the Soviet Union. Almost immediately after the signing of the pact, the Soviet government forced upon Estonia a treaty of mutual assistance and the provision for Soviet military bases. 2 In June 1940 the Soviet government accused the Estonian government of not adhering to the treaty and of hostile actions, and demanded the formation of a new government acceptable to them.
Little did they know that this was only the beginning. By the end of the century, the number of people who died a violent death at the hand of their fellow humans would rise to more than one hundred million. They died not only through wars between nations, but also through mass exterminations and genocide, such as the murder of twenty million “class enemies, spies, and traitors” in the Soviet Union under Stalin or the unspeakable horrors of the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. They also died in countless smaller internal conflicts, such as the Spanish civil war or during the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia when a quarter of that country’s population was murdered. We only need to watch the daily news on television to realize that the madness has not abated, that is continuing into the twenty-first century. Another aspect of the collective dysfunction of the human mind is the unprecedented violence that humans are inflicting on other life-forms and
There are as many hommes fatales in myth, literature, and movies as there are femmes. In Greek mythology, Zeus was a great Shapeshifter, changing forms to cavort w i t h h u m a n m a i d e n s who u s u a l l y ended up suffering for it. Looking for Mr. Goodbar is about a woman seeking a perfect lover, but finding instead a Shapeshifting man who brings her death. T h e film The Stranger depicts a good woman (Loretta Young) who is about to marry a monstrous Shapeshifter, a closet Nazi played by Orson Welles. T h e fatale aspect is not always essential to this archetype. Shapeshifters may only dazzle and confuse the hero, rather than try to kill her. Shapeshifting is a natural part o f romance. It's common to be blinded by love, unable to see the other person clearly through the many masks they wear. T h e character played by Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone appears to be a Shapeshifter to hero Kathleen Turner, who is
'The basic experiment, as well as all these and other variations on it, is presented in Milgram's highly readable Obedience to Authoriry, 1974. A review of much of the subsequent research on obedience can be found in Blass (2004). lIn fact, Milgram first began his investigations in an attempt to understand how the German citizenry could have participated in the concentration camp destruction of millions of innocents during the years of Nazi ascendancy. After testing his experimental procedures in the United States, he had planned to take them to Germany, a country whose populace he was sure would provide enough obe- dience for a full-flown scientific analysis of the concept. The first eye-opening experiment in New Haven, Connecticut, however, make it clear that he could save his money and stay close to home. "I found so much obedience," he said, "I hardly saw the need of taking the experiment to Germany."
