Why do we need morality

Why do we need morality?

This does not mean that all of us are equally strong, smart or beautiful, but that everyone has the ability to damage or kill the other. The main goals, we all want to achieve, are having a shelter, security, power, wealth and enough food. This means that people are constantly competing with each other and that makes all of us (who desire the same things) enemies. Hobbes names the insecurity and fear people feel towards each other a "state of nature". In this state there are no moral rules or enforced laws, also no justice or injustice. People, being violent and arbitrary, will only follow their own interest. So without laws and boundaries, people would be in constant war - every man for himself. In this kind of society there is no time for cultural or industrial development. No one can enjoy life because of the constant fear they life in. The "state of nature" or in other words chaos is not be beneficial to anyone. So to get what

But i can not for certain say that the person reading this exists although it might seems like it to me. I think that you really can’t reject solipsism on the whole because you do know that you exists, but can you for certain say that anybody else does? It may as well be just an illusion, but you never can say for certain. That is why you can not reject it, although you may say that you don’t believe it. 3. What is Kant’s categorical imperative? It is a kind of ethic or moral law or philosophy that applies to every being. It is a motivation for an action that must be completed. For example, if i want to get a grade for this exam, it is imperative that i answer these questions. It is a certain action or inaction that must be theoretically completed in order to achieve what is necessary. The necessity for this moral law is quite simple: Immanuel Kant provided a sort of equation for the humanity, if we can

Pros and Cons of the Capital Punishment

Pros and Cons of the Capital Punishment. The death penalty is a controversial issue in most countries, but it is completely abolished in our country. Arguments for and against it are based on moral, practical, religious and emotional groups. On the one hand, there are advocates of the death penalty, who argue that it deters crime, improves community by making them sure, that convicted criminals would never find their way out onto the streets to offend again and it is cheaper than keeping convicted criminals in high security prison for the rest of their natural lives. On the other hand, there are opponents of the death penalty claim that `capital punishment

part of the society. It could be said that the most important part of the hero's progress is this teacher, someone who gives guidance and the knowledge how to defeat the antagonist. Commonly this guide is from a different world and a stranger to the main character. He has alien ways and an exotic nature. This mentor needs to be a stranger because nothing can be learned from something common and known. He provides the moral of the story and initiates the change in both the hero and the consumer. But it all happens behind the scenes. The consumer needs the hero to identify himself with someone but needs the mentor to get the big lesson in the end. This stock character has the noble savage effect something strange shows us a new world with new ideas which alter our take on the world we have known so far. In the beginning of colonialism, the term savage was defined by fear natives in America

Iga rühm esindab fundamentaalset muutust indiviidi moraalse perspektiivis. Selleks, et mõõta taset, millel inimene moraalselt opereerib, töötas Kohlberg välja intervjuu-protsessi. Selles esitatakse hüpoteetilisi situatsioone, milles esineb moraalne dilemma. Inimese vastuste põhjal on näha, millisel moraalse arengu etapil inimene asub. (Moral Development and Moral Education: An Overview) Kohlberg peabki inimsuhete põhiregulaatoriks moraalseid norme ning iseloomustab sotsiaalset arengut lapse arvamusega moraalist. (Butterworth, Harris, 1994, 266.) 4 2

Hemingway A Farewell to Arms (themes, motifs, symbols)

The majority of the characters remain ambivalent about the war, resentful of the terrible destruction it causes, doubtful of the glory it supposedly brings. The novel offers masterful descriptions of the conflict's senseless brutality and violent chaos: the scene of the Italian army's retreat remains one of the most profound evocations of war in American literature. As the neat columns of men begin to crumble, so too do the soldiers' nerves, minds, and capacity for rational thought and moral judgment. Henry's shooting of the engineer for refusing to help free the car from the mud shocks the reader for two reasons: first, the violent outburst seems at odds with Henry's coolly detached character; second, the incident occurs in a setting that robs it of its moral import --the complicity of Henry's fellow soldiers legitimizes the killing. The murder of the engineer seems justifiable because it is an inevitable by-product of the spiraling violence and disorder of the war.

Nobody can win a war. People started to make a war thousands years ago. During this time they had different purposes, but the final was the same a war caused a great deal of sorrow. But is it worth fighting? Are there any winners or losers in war? Firstly, both sides get bored with a feud. It makes much money, physical and moral strength. Not only soldiers civilian population gets tired of being in a danger and worrying about relatives and friends. Secondly, the consequences of a war are horrible. Terrible memories would not leave people. Every time they recall those events, they suffer again because no one is able to make somebody happy fighting. Thirdly, a lot of people die. People should have the right to design their own babies. Have you ever caught yourself thinking about what if you had the power to design your own baby? Most likely everyone has. It is every parent's hope that their child will turn out to be a perfect human being without any physical or mental disabilities. But is it moral? First of all, if parents could design their own baby everyone would be perfect. What is more there would not be any babies born with illnesses or disabilities, both mental and physical. This is good news both to parents and children because living together with a handicap or being one is a very hard and sad thing. Bur war brings with it human's deaths, innocent victims, hunger, illnesses, violence, distractions etc. Is this worth fighting? On the one hand, there are some people who are able to kill houndreds of innocent victims to make his goal realized, because he has a power and he is allowed to do everything he wants. In addition to that, sometimes people use a war just to justify their revenge, they just use the power, they have, to satisfy own ambitions to feel a win's spirit. So they become winners, but it is only formally. THE VALUE OF THINGS VS THE PRICE OF THINGS

People in my age also want some things that are not buyable. Everyone want a person, that loves us, by our side. Money can not buy ourselves friends or lovers. Of course it is wrong in some ways, because if you are rich, people want to be your friends for your money, but to be honest, these are not people to trust. Every one needs belongings that money can not buy. There are many kinds of values, like personal, family, material, spiritual and moral. Personal values we build to live our life right and guide us to relate with other people. Personal values are related to family values, because we depend on our families. Family values are good or bad, which depends on parents, because they teach how to behave outside the home. Material values are things that allow us to survive, these are the basic needs, like food, clothes and protection from the environment. Spiritual values are the importance we give to non-material aspects in our lives

Law-makers breaking the law: torture as a justified interrogation technique?

Law-makers breaking the law: torture as a justified interrogation technique? 1 Introduction It was Jeremy Bentham who thought of a famous method to give ethics a rational basis. He was fed up with the penal laws where offenders met corporate punishment and together with Cesario Beccaria he stood up to torture, corporal punishment, and the death penalty. He resisted against irrational moral emotions as the instigation for ethical conduct, saying only reasonable grounds could justify the moral decisions of individuals and legislators. And now his theory of is the one that is known for justifying torture (Verplaetse, 2008). Since 9/11 and the following fight against terrorism it became clear that the Bush administration thought of torture as something justifiable while it goes against all possible agreed upon treaties and conventions. its better to have any religion then to be atheist. We live in the 21th century where democracy and freedom of different kinds dominate in most parts of the world. Freedom of worship is not an exception, therefore people can believe or not believe in anything they want. According to this many people decided not to have any religion at all and called themselves ,,atheists". These people believe in their own physical and moral forces only, but now and here i will try to persuade the reader that having a God or some deity is better than to be godless. First reason, why it is better to be a religous person than atheist, is your spiritual and mental safety because if you belive in God , you will always have someone to rely on even in the worst situations, and you will never give up as you would probably do, if you stayed against the misery alone, on your own

There are people who believe that an ideal community should be merciful even to the ones who have not shown mercy, but there are also people who think that violating the rights of fellow members of the community, particularly if it happens consistently, should be punished as severely as the death sentence. Most Christians are firmly against capital punishment, because they believe that there is some good in every person, even if he does not show any regret for what he has done. Not all

Thatcher was committed to reducing the power of the trades unions. Several unions launched strikes in response to legislation introduced to curb their power, but these actions eventually collapsed, and gradually Thatcher's reforms reduced the power and influence of the unions. Also, though an early backer of decriminalization of male homosexuality, Thatcher, at the 1987 Conservative party conference, issued the statement that "Children who need to be taught to respect traditional moral values are being taught that they have an inalienable right to be gay". She fought for many issues to offer people better and more fair life. One of Thatcher's acts in her last half year in office was to put pressure on US President George H. W. Money is not the Most Important Thing in Life

Even if an individual is extremely rich, this does not necessarily lead to happiness. In some cases, the contrary is true and vast wealth brings with it a whole range of problems and insecurities. To sum it all up, although there are those who would rank money as the single most important thing in life, most people would disagree. Money, has an important part to play but perhaps the world would be a more harmonious place to live in if capital was kept in proportion and society dealt with moral issues. Film review “Scent of a Woman“ 1992 by Martin Brest

Pacino makes Scent of a woman something very memorable, powerful and a life affirming film experience. Even though it's over 2 hours 30 min, it fly's by. Scent of a Woman is based on the 1975 Italian film Profumo Di Donna. I think this incredible movie leaves a legacy of life. It makes us appreciate life and also understand that a life can be lived in a minute just like Al Pacino says in one of this movie's most beautiful scenes. The movie also talks about values, integrity, and moral principles, by sides of this movie's wonderful script it's incredible cast makes it one of the most outstanding movies I have ever seen. And the humor of this movie is really great. I truly recommend it.

the Internet was in every tenth family. Now, nine out of ten families have access to the World Wide Web. As unseemly as it is filled society World Wide Web, the Internet has both supporters and opponents. Opponents of the Internet are mostly parents of children, who believe that their children are spending a large amount of their time at the computer. Virtual reality, leads to a strong computer addiction and a loss of reality, principles, purposes and moral values. It can become a complete substitute for Real life. Computer games promote children's thinking and their creative component. But, in practice Firstly today' s youth prefers arcade and sports games that do not contribute to their creative development, and only chase the adrenaline in the body, bringing a sense of joy to children. Secondly, computer games cause children to develop an addictive desire to play them again and again, which adversely affects the child's development

Designers and users of technical artefacts seek for the connections between the physical and the functional natures. Technology as a Black Box. Ethics of Technology Ethics is the discipline of pilosophy that studies moral judgements. Ehics is an important discipline in philosophy with important practical applications. There are some theoretical assumptions about morality (We are responsible of our actions, we better be good, values do not derive from facts) that we will not discuss! Ethical issues in technology include safety, environment, privacy, military issues, etc. Engineers usually have codes at work, listing principles against sabotage, espionage, fraud, etc.

Oscar Wilde “The Nightingale and the Rose”

The reddest rose in the world was ready. When the Student saw that he was really happy and grabbed that and ran up to the Professor's house to see his love. But the girl instead of falling into Student's hands, frowned. She said that the Chamberlain's nephew had sent her some real jewels and everybody knew that they cost far more than flowers. Boy was disappointed and left. He was really disappointed in true love, he went to his room and began to study Metaphysics. Moral was something like so that people don't notice the real values in life, they often don't appreciate the most generous acts. People also start to understand values after they have lost somebody or something.

Might the Welsh language face a bright future?

their roots and it is important to be proud of their origin. The future of the language lies in the hands of the young generation. Before that as English was mostly used, the learning of English was the most important thing because it was the language of communication. Nowadays the Welsh language is being supported by individuals as well as organizations. The support is material when it comes to supporting different establishments which further the Welsh language. But the support is also moral as more and more public bodies, major businesses, even smaller companies and voluntary organizations are making increasing use of the language. The use of the language as a business language side by side with English has become somewhat of a sign of quality customer service. There has been an increasing interest towards Welsh also because at the workplace the ability to speak and write Welsh has become as important as for example computer skills have been.

TV violence, Essee

TV violence Nowadays, television is the mainstream medium, which influences significantly the public opinion and, furthermore, it has the power to influence the formation of an individual’s identity. In such a situation, television violence has a particularly significant and dangerous impact on the viewers, especially youth, whose identity, moral values and beliefs are in the process of formation. Young people often perceive celebrities they see on TV and imaginary characters they see in movies as models for their own behavior. Children usually want to be soldiers or gangsters. As a result, they attempt to follow their lead, which often leads to the development of negative models of behavior. Also, some people think that fighting scenes, explosions, shooting scenes and other violent elements of movies are so awesome

However, unlike Aeschylus' version, there is no reconciliation between Prometheus and Zeus in Shelley's narrative. Instead, Zeus is overthrown, which allows Prometheus to be released. 1821 A Defence of Poetry is an essay, first published posthumously in 1840. It was written in response to his friend Thomas Love Peacock's article The Four Ages of Poetry, where Peacock claimed that poetry though beautiful is utterly useless. Shelley argues that poetry brings about moral good, exercises and expands the imagination, and the imagination is the source of sympathy, compassion, and love, which rest on the ability to project oneself into the position of another person. 1822 The triumph of Life an elegy, unfinished, published in 1824 after Shelley died. Characteristics of Shelley's poetry: Themes: beauty, the passions, nature, political liberty, creativity, and the sanctity of the imagination Idealism belief in the goodness of mankind
