With this poem he means that he can now be free and does not have to think what the society
is thinking about him because the society is changing. He does not have to pretend of being
religious or repress his desires. In ´´Annus Mirablis´´ he is writing how the freedom of sexual
intercourse came in 1963. The Beatles became popular and Lawrence's novel Lady Chatterley
has been the subject of a high profile court case, after it was banned as being obscene. Larkin
was happy about the new era and new possibilities, but he says that it's already too late for
him.
