Law-makers breaking the law: torture as a justified interrogation technique? 1 Introduction It was Jeremy Bentham who thought of a famous method to give ethics a rational basis. He was fed up with the penal laws where offenders met corporate punishment and together with Cesario Beccaria he stood up to torture, corporal punishment, and the death penalty. He resisted against irrational moral emotions as the instigation for ethical conduct, saying only reasonable grounds could justify the moral decisions of individuals and legislators. And now his theory of is the one that is known for justifying torture (Verplaetse, 2008). Since 9/11 and the following fight against terrorism it became clear that the Bush administration thought of torture as something justifiable while it goes against all possible agreed upon treaties and conventions. One could indeed possibly think ...

Its speed of operation was greater than comparable hardware then available. In recent months major faults have developed in the equipment. The local agent appears incapable of providing a reliable repair service. The system is regularly out of order for several days at a time. The makers have agreed to replace the system free of charge. The new equipment will not be installed for at least six months. Such a delay is clearly unacceptable to us. We should insist that ICN send their own engineer to service the equipment. The equipment should be transported to the ICN plant for inspection and repair there. When the ICN equipment was first introduced, it was found to provide a flexible and advanced system. ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM The term acid rain refers to what scientists call acid deposition. It is caused by airborne acidic pollutants and has highly destructive results. Scientists first discovered acid rain in 1852, when the English chemist Robert Agnus invented the term. From then until now, acid rain has been an issue of intense debate among scientists and policy makers. Acid rain, one of the most important environmental problems of all, cannot be seen. The invisible gases that cause acid rain usually come from automobiles or coal-burning power plants. Acid rain moves easily, affecting locations far beyond those that let out the pollution. As a result, this global pollution issue causes great debates between countries that fight over polluting each other's environments. For years, science studied the true causes of acid rain. Some scientists concluded

The ground work for mass communications in the 20th century was laid in the 19th century by two inventions, which allowed people to communicate by wire: the electric telegraph and the telephone. As the telegraph came into widespread use, inventors searched for a way to transmit sound without wires. In 1885 the German scientist Hertz made a machine that produced radio waves and a receiver which could detect them from distance the radio. Soon after that the makers of the first radio realized that it could also be used for `broadcasting'messages for information or entertainment. Regular radio bradcasting had first started in the United States in 1921. It was immediately popular. New radio stations mushroomed. Journalism is one of the most importnant professions. be the largest clock in the world, but other enterprising firms were not happy with the manner in which they had no opportunity to compete for the contract. Subsequently, the Astronomer Royal, Sir George Airy, was appointed as referee for the new clock and produced a specification in 1846. A key requirement of the specification was that the clock was to strike the first blow of each hour correct to one second in time. Tenders were invited and were received from three makers, Dent, Vulliamy and Whitehurst. Dent was Airy' s favourite and soon he had to make the clock himself. In 1852 Dent was awarded the contract. There were many troubles during building the tower. The first of the difficulties occurred when it was discovered that the architect had failed to make the necessary provision for the clock in the tower. Edward John Dent died in 1853 and the clock mechanism was completed by his stepson Frederick Rippon (who changed his name to Frederick Dent)

Without them it is pointless to make movies. In order to get the meaning of the film, audience have to decode director’s and writer’s work. Unfortunately, it is not always the case that movies will make sense. That is, because of the time and various limitations, the director is not always capable providing the best and easy imagery that is clear to everyone, and because of that, the movie will limit it’s meaning to the viewer. This is a two way street – director and/or movie makers have to make the best decision to give the best viewing experience which would also make sense but the audience have to be educated enough to see the meaning behind the shots, the dialogue, imagery and put together bigger picture. Furthermore, not everyone will be able to go the cinema. The travel cost, if they live far from the cinema, ticket price, lack of cinemas overall etc will limit cinemas grasp on the society compared to books, which are relatively cost efficient, easy to

How genre and narrative makes meaning in ``The Black Dahlia`` When analyzing a film, people understand the movie is much more complicated than it seems. To make a difference, to give a meaning to the film, film-makers have used different visual and thematic features. There are macro features (genre, narrative) as well as micro features (mise en scene, cinematography) and they are linked together in many ways. I have chosen to analyse the closing sequence of ``The Black Dahlia``, directed by Brian de Palma, and I will focus on macro features in this essay. Brian de Palma is well known director, who is focused on noir area through his career

National innovation system (NIS) The national innovation systems approach stresses that the flows of technology and information among people, enterprises and institutions are key to the innovative process. Innovation and technology development are the result of a complex set of relationships among actors in the system, which includes enterprises, universities and government research institutes. For policy makers, an understanding of the national innovation system can help identify leverage points for enhancing innovative performance and overall competitiveness. It can assist in pinpointing mismatches within the system, both among institutions and in relation to government policies, which can thwart technology development and innovation. interests and rights, the obligations of e.g. parents and sanctions if they fail – provide us with the analytical tool necessary to develop the content of children’s legal rights. They can, through statutes, leading cases and legal writing, guide us to a better understanding of: a) who is supposed to act, in order to provide the child with physical care, supervision, etc.; b) under which circumstances; c) with which instruments; and d) when? Further, it should be mentioned that policy-makers find it relatively easy to agree on rights. Yet their results often leave the impression that nothing is gained, except perhaps that they have managed to produce a text (and thus suggest they have done something, at least). If authorities are, for example, according to the legal system of their country, obliged in general to consider the best interests of children, it does not constitute a legal right for the child towards an authority in a specific case

53 The contribution of these children has disappeared as the idea of children being incompetent and irrational is overwhelmingly prevalent in the Western society.54 It can be argued that there is considerable confusion and national anxiety `about what role young people below the age of majority should play in community and political life`. 55 On the one hand, the gradual recognition of children as social actors both at local and national levels has encouraged the policy makers and the media to some extent to take more effective measures in providing the voices and representation of the most marginalized minority in society. For example, the children`s television news bulletin and website of BBC Newsround which is the only news programme for children in the UK, recognises children as active and valuable citizens. Its reporters are producing news stories that aim to `equip children to
Continental African governments must impose the highest tariffs on the importation of luxury cars, such as Rolls Royce, Jaguar, BMW, Lexus, or the so called high cost utility cars. After this, they must impose further road tax on the use of the vehicles. African governments must also demand the equivalent amount of products be bought from Africa by the producers of these products. In making your decision to buy a luxury automobile, you understand that most of these luxury car makers never have African dealerships, and that only recently did they start dealing with our people. If there is no African dealership around your area, call up the company and find out whether they have one, and where it is located. Remember that it doesn’t matter where you bought your car, you can always take it to the nearest dealership for repairs. Inform the Black auto-dealer why you decided to come from all the way in New York to buy a car from him
Finally, improvement should address both operation and design of the system with relevant information for improvements. Figure 3.3 Three main actions in construction projects, source Lauri Koskelas presentation at "First TTK Day of Project Management" November 2009. 28 Simply said, a production system in construction should be built up in a way that it gives decision- makers (managers) the information needed: the level of resource utilization, and controllable elements/parameters (metrics). It means a production system should supply managers with elements to manage work in matters of quality, speed, dependability, flexibility and cost. This is needed to deliver work on time and to ensure minimal work in progress, short customer lead times, and maximum utilization of resources. However, in-depth analyses of these goals show that they are in conflict. For

■ SCHEDULE YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT EARLY If you are in sales, schedule your first appointment as early as possi- ble. Many of the most important people you could want to see get into the office at 7:00 and 7:30 in the morning. Arrange to meet them at that time. In his stated con icts of interest, you will see that he has received consulting fees from Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods, and Mars Corporation (makers of Snickers, M&Ms, and Mars Bars). Does this make him guilty of skewing data to serve corporate interests?
